Felidae Centre

Felidae Centre Felidae Centre started in 2010 when we saved our first two animals, the cheetah, Thato and the caracal, Lilo. All lions are saved from canned hunting.
(267)

The centre has only blossomed since and we have saved and released big and small species. We now provide a safe home for more than 60 animals. We are a rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary who takes pride in saving all animals that are indigenous to South Africa but our main focus are predators. We provide these species with a safe home and when needed a forever home. At Felidae Centre we do normal

and adventure tours to educate the public about our animals and show what we do to save and conserve them. Here you will get amazing photo opportunities of our different species. Further we explain about canned hunting and why we are completely against it. NORMAL TOUR
Our educational tours are run by well-trained guides filled with information and eager to share it to the public and guests. A tour usually takes about an hour, depending on the size of the group. 🍧🐒 A Cool Treat for Faan! 🐒🍧

There is nothing quite like an ice lolly on a warm day, and our vervet monkey Faan certainly agrees! Watching him carefully inspect, lick, and enjoy his frozen treat reminds us just how intelligent and curious these incredible primates are.

Faan’s journey to Felidae, however, was not an easy one. As a young monkey, he was kept as a pet by people who did not understand the complex social and natural behaviors of vervet monkeys. When Faan reached sexual maturity, his instincts began to take over. In the wild, male vervet monkeys compete for dominance and their place within a troop. This often includes challenging behavior, and biting can be a completely normal part of their natural social structure.

Unfortunately, when Faan displayed these natural behaviors, he was no longer wanted and was discarded by the people who had raised him. Thankfully, we were fortunate enough to give him a second chance here at Felidae.

Today, Faan lives with four other vervet monkeys, where he can express natural behaviors, socialize with his own kind, and enjoy a life that is much closer to what nature intended. His story is an important reminder that wild animals are not pets. Even when raised by humans, their wild instincts remain a fundamental part of who they are.

Seeing Faan happily enjoying his ice lolly today is a beautiful reminder of why rescue and education are so important. Every animal deserves understanding, respect, and the opportunity to live the life they were meant to live.

Every animal at Felidae has a story, and Alex’s story is one of strength, survival, and resilience.

Our handsome 10-year-old male lion, Alex, faced challenges from the very beginning of his life. Shortly after he was born, a more dominant lioness stole him from his mother. In the chaos that followed, the other cubs injured him, leaving him fighting for survival when he should have been enjoying the safety and comfort of his mother’s care.

Despite those difficult beginnings, Alex grew into the magnificent lion he is today. Life has continued to test him, and he now lives with epilepsy. Watching a lion experience seizures is never easy, but Alex reminds us every day of the incredible determination animals possess. Thanks to his medication, careful monitoring, and the love and dedication of those who care for him, he continues to enjoy life and face each day with courage.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects both humans and animals, causing abnormal electrical activity in the brain that can lead to seizures. While there is no cure, many animals can live happy and comfortable lives with the proper treatment and support.

Alex is more than just a lion. He is a survivor. He is a reminder that every animal deserves a second chance, regardless of the challenges they face. We are incredibly proud of him and grateful to be part of his journey.

❤️ Here’s to Alex, our warrior with a heart as big as his roar.

There is something truly special about moments like these with Rubicon, one of our beautiful male lions at Felidae. Watching him laying peacefully and completely relaxed while we move around him is a reminder of how far he has come in his journey.

Rubicon was originally bred for the hunting industry before being rescued and given a second chance at life here at Felidae. Instead of facing a cruel future, he now spends his days in safety, surrounded by familiar faces, large natural enclosures, and the care he deserves.

Many people notice the striking white markings under a lion’s eyes and wonder what purpose they serve. These lighter patches actually help lions while hunting at night. The white fur reflects even the smallest amount of moonlight, helping lions communicate silently with pride members in the dark veld. It allows them to keep visual contact during hunts without making a sound, an incredible adaptation for nocturnal teamwork.

Seeing Rubicon calm, trusting, and simply enjoying the moment reminds us why rescue work matters. Every animal deserves the opportunity to live without fear and to experience peace, even after a difficult beginning.

Tequila, our beautiful female leopard, enjoying one of her favourite moments of the day — feeding time. 🐆✨

Leopards are incredibly strong and intelligent predators, known for their ability to drag prey into trees to keep it safe from scavengers and other predators. Unlike lions that live in prides, leopards are mostly solitary animals and rely on stealth, patience, and powerful muscles to survive in the wild.

At Felidae, every meal is more than just feeding an animal. It is part of giving rescued wildlife a second chance and allowing people to learn more about these incredible species up close. Watching Tequila enjoy her meal reminds us of the beauty, strength, and wild spirit these animals carry every single day.

Today our hearts are incredibly heavy at Felidae. One of the young cubs of our beautiful lioness Kiara crossed the rainbow bridge after becoming very sick last week. 💔

From the moment we noticed something was wrong, we did everything we possibly could to help her. Our vet treated her immediately, and today returned once again with more medication, fluids, and hope in our hearts. Sadly, despite everyone’s efforts, her little body was just too tired to keep fighting.

One of the hardest moments for us was watching Kiara and the other cubs come to greet her before we laid her to rest. Animals feel loss far deeper than many people realize, and standing there with this lion family during their goodbye was something that touched all of us deeply.

Working with wildlife means experiencing the most beautiful moments, but also the heartbreaking ones. We celebrate every life saved, every second chance given, and we mourn every loss as part of our own family. This little girl was loved deeply by everyone here, and although her time with us was far too short, she will always remain part of Felidae’s story.

Run free, little one. 🕊️ You will forever be loved and remembered.

Busy little Gin was hard at work today, digging through the sand searching for tasty treats hidden underground.

Did you know meerkats have incredibly strong claws that help them dig for insects, worms, scorpions, and other small prey? Their digging skills also help them create underground burrows to stay safe from predators and escape the heat during the day.

Watching Gin explore and use his natural instincts reminds us how important enrichment and natural behaviours are for animals living in human care. Every little dig, sniff, and scratch is part of what makes these amazing animals so special.

At Felidae, moments like these remind us why we are so passionate about giving every animal a second chance and a safe place to simply be wild.
