STATEMENT ON THE SUCCESSFUL HOSTING OF THE DISTRICT COMMUNITY SAFETY INDABA IN DE AAR
The Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, under the leadership of MEC LA Koloi, successfully hosted a District Community Safety Indaba in De Aar, bringing together key stakeholders and community structures to collectively address crime and safety challenges affecting communities across the district.
The Indaba provided an important platform for communities, law-enforcement agencies, traditional and community leaders, civil society organisations, religious formations, local government and other stakeholders to engage openly on the factors contributing to crime and insecurity.
The discussions reaffirmed that the fight against crime cannot be left to law-enforcement agencies alone. It requires a coordinated and sustained response from all sectors of society, with communities playing an active role in preventing crime, reporting criminal activities and working with the police and other authorities.
MEC Koloi emphasised the importance of strengthening partnerships between communities and law-enforcement agencies, while ensuring that concerns raised by residents are addressed through practical interventions and continued engagement.
The Department welcomes the commitments made during the Indaba and will continue working with all stakeholders to strengthen community safety initiatives, improve coordination and promote safer communities throughout the Northern Cape.
The success of the De Aar District Community Safety Indaba demonstrates the value of bringing government and communities together to find solutions to the challenges of crime and safety.
The Department calls on communities to remain vigilant, reject criminality and actively participate in building safer neighbourhoods. The fight against crime belongs to all of us, and safer communities require collective action.
Various Mayors and Speakers from local municipalities in the Pixley Ka Seme District, The Deputy Provincial Commissioner Major General Besnaar from the South African Police Services and community leaders was in attendance. The next district Indaba will be in Kuruman on 22 September 2026.
