Katrina Esau is one of the last remaining speakers of an ancient language. The 88-year-old is fluent in N|uu, which was spoken by South Africa’s earliest inhabitants – the San people. Determined to preserve her heritage, Katrina convenes N|uu lessons for kids from her home in the Northern Cape, and has also published the first N|uu children’s book titled !Qhoi n|a Tjhoi. By exposing more people to her mother tongue, Katrina is ensuring that N|uu can be remembered and understood for generations to come. This we celebrate this cultural icon and woman of excellence.
