BE PART OF THIS TRANSFORMATION AND HAVE YOUR SAY THE RENAMING OF UJ RESIDENCE AND DAY HOUSES
UJ engages stakeholders for the Renaming and Rebranding of student Residences and Day Houses
The Naming Committee at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) is starting the interactive process of actively engaging with all UJ stakeholders to participate in the Renaming and Rebranding of the identities of the 34 student-residences and day houses.

This process is part of various strategic phases from the well-managed merger of the former Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR) and Vista University in 2005, to focus on the institutional culture.
The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University, Prof Ihron Rensburg states, “We are mindful of the inclusivity of all stakeholders – past and present – the transparency in which this process is being conducted and most importantly the commitment and enthusiasm displayed by the students themselves. No one will feel left out when this process is finally completed. The sensitivity of the committee in addressing the whole transformation agenda is highly impressive.”
The essence of the names of the residences and day houses across the Auckland Park Kingsway (APK), Auckland Park Bunting Road (APB), Doornfontein (DFC) and Soweto (SWC) campuses should reflect the brand and the values of the University as the pan African epi-centre of critical enquiry; its role in society; its location in the City of Johannesburg; and its focus on Global Excellence and Stature (GES).
This year, as the University celebrates its first decade, UJ invites the entire UJ community, old and new, to take part in the process of renaming our residences and day houses, to reflect the UJ vision.
Khutso Rammutla, the president of the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the University said he was proud of the UJ’s substantive evolution. He encouraged students to actively engage with the process. “I think that as we [students] now are able to identify with the progressive and inclusive character of the University. It is a good time that we start engaging in the process of renaming and reinventing the cultures and practices of our residences.”

Background on the Naming Committee:
After the Naming Committee was formed in 2008, the review of the Residences started in 2010. In 2013, the University changed its strategic direction and focus, it is in this view that UJ embarks on an aligned, consultative and informed process of the renaming. This is in line with the ongoing transformation process of the institution, which is to create an institutional culture that is inclusive, and builds cohesion.
