The SAHRC Mpumalanga Provincial Office today, 02 September, conducted a subpoena hearing against the Mpumalanga Department of Education, led by Commissioner Tshepo Madlingozi.

The subpoena comes after the department’s non-responsiveness in two matters, one involved the harassment of a leaner by a teacher and the other involved threats of exclusion of a learner due inability to pay school fees.

Today, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), led by Commissioner Tshepo Madlingozi, met with a delegation from Human Rights Watch (HRW), led by Mausi Segun, Executive Director of HRW’s Africa Division.

The engagement focused on the work of the Commission and areas of mutual interest, including reparative justice, structural inequality, the National Question Campaign and the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.

The parties also discussed South Africa’s roles in the AU Peace and Security Council, SADC and the UN Human Rights Council, and opportunities for future collaboration.

Commissioner Madlingozi attended a 3-day ‘Reimagining the Future of Human Rights in Africa: Southern Africa Convening’ in Gaborone, Botswana, last week.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Regional Office for Southern Africa, the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions, Open Society Foundations, and the Parliament of Botswana organised the convening.

Commissioner Madlingozi's presentation focused on reimagining human rights through the lens of reparative justice and land justice. Anchoring the presentation in the SAHRC's Promoting a Culture of Human Rights through the Resolution of the National Question campaign, the Commissioner explicated that the failure of land reform is not simply a failure to transfer sufficient land.

It reflects a deeper failure to transform the material, spatial and political relationships produced through colonial dispossession.
