Commemoration| To mark this year’s World Day Against Child Labour, observed every year on June 12 to raise awareness against the exploitation of children, the Commission partnered with
Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (UNHCHR)
and International Labour Organization to host an awareness campaign at Madibatlou Middle School in Olifantsfontein, Gauteng.
Child labour is linked to socio-economic challenges such as poverty, unemployment, inequality and limited access to education and social services. In addition, children are particularly vulnerable in informal economic sectors.
The key objectives of commemorating the World Day Against Child Labour are to:
• Educate learners and educators on the legal framework prohibiting child labour.
• Raise awareness of child labour as a violation of the rights of children.
• Promote school ‑ level prevention, identification, and reporting of child labour.
The commemoration reinforces South Africa’s constitutional and international obligations to protect children from exploitative labour.
Through awareness‑raising, stakeholder engagement and collaboration, the initiative seeks to contribute to the prevention and elimination of child labour, advance the rights and dignity of children and promote social justice and human rights.
