An interesting story about a little known artifact placed, known as the Gold Rhino, along Main Street, Johannesburg CBD.

The Gold Rhino is a fascinating object, the only one of its kind in the World.

The most famous gold object recovered from the royal burial site on Mapungubwe Hill, now a Unesco World Heritage Site.

The gold rhino was probably a symbol of great power for the Mapungubwe King and his people.

It was first discovered in January 1934 and slowly has become the icon of Mapungubwe, South Africa's oldest kingdom.

The original piece, a thousand-year-old gold rhino, is made from pure gold foil and is only 15,2cm in length.

This 'big five figurine is a unique and magnificent piece of gold craftsmanship, with sturdy shoulders and two additional rounded gold nails for eyes.

The upright tail has several engraved marks for decoration giving the impression of a switch.

It was originally formed onto a wooden core, which has since decayed.
