Ongoing electricity outages in Johannesburg are another failure of Lesufi’s government.
Residents — especially in the Johannesburg C*D, Lombardy, Kew and Gresswold — are being left without power for up to seven days or longer. Food spoils. Businesses close. Vulnerable people who rely on electricity for oxygen are put at risk.
Paying Eskom is not the same as keeping the lights on. City Power is cash-strapped and cannot deliver a reliable supply. Stolen cables and vandalised substations are no longer an excuse. This is a failure to secure and maintain basic infrastructure.
In many of these areas, power cuts come with burst pipes. Residents are living with both at once.
The DA will engage COGTA MEC Jacob Mamabolo to intervene. Electricity is a necessity, not a privilege. Johannesburg needs protected substations, proper security and proactive maintenance — not another week of the same excuses.

Corruption is not victimless.
Last week we marched in Germiston because we refuse to accept a city where public money disappears and those who expose wrongdoing are left unprotected.
This is about lives.
Mpho Mafole was Head of Forensic Audits in Ekurhuleni. He was doing the work government expected of him, investigating corruption and following the money. He was killed. His family has been left to fight for justice largely on their own. Today, 4 September, they stand in court hoping justice will prevail.
Where is the City of Ekurhuleni?

Where is the political leadership?

Where is the urgency?
Every rand stolen is a service denied. Every protected official sends a message that criminality pays.
A DA-led Ekurhuleni will protect whistleblowers, strengthen forensic investigations, follow the money and pursue recovery of stolen funds.
Ekurhuleni is not for sale.

Gauteng has become the home of the coalition circus — and Johannesburg is the main tent.
Mayors change faster than traffic lights. And let’s be honest, Joburg’s traffic lights barely change at all.
One week a mayor. Next week another. Then a motion of no confidence, a broken coalition deal and somewhere in the confusion, somebody forgot to run the city.
Potholes big enough to need planning permission.

Taps that run on hope.

Lights so rare that residents take photos when they come on.
Residents pay champagne-level rates for tap-water government. Except there is often no water in the tap.

Speaker tables the Gauteng Legislature’s Annual Report 2025/26 — a record of how public money was spent and where government failed.
This report is not a ceremonial exercise. It is a public account of how Gauteng’s government used taxpayers’ money, and of the service delivery failures that DA Members of the Legislature have exposed through oversight.
Residents have a right to see where funds went, what was not delivered, and which departments continue to fail on housing, health, education, infrastructure and safety.

14 of 45 Gauteng housing projects have been illegally occupied.
That is roughly one in three projects over the past five years. Legitimate beneficiaries are still waiting while completed or partly built developments are taken over.
Affected projects include Eagle Nest, Western Mega Project, Danville, Beverly Hills and Olievenhoutbosch Extension 36.
The department says it now has a security panel and that each eviction order costs about R1.5 million. That is the cost of acting after the fact. These sites should have been protected from the start.
The DA will table further questions to MEC Tasneem Motara on why these projects were left vulnerable, how many beneficiaries have been delayed, and what each project is worth.
Homes built with public money must go to verified beneficiaries — not be surrendered after the invasion has already happened.

Failed contractors are not being blacklisted — and communities pay the price.
The Department of Infrastructure Development admits it does not have a list of blacklisted companies. It only has names recommended for restriction, and is still waiting for action from the Director-General of Public Works.
It also cannot say:

how much public money has been lost
whether any money has been recovered
how much has been spent on replacement contractors

Late, abandoned and shoddy projects leave children in unsafe schools, patients without proper facilities, and communities without working infrastructure. Taxpayers then pay again when a new contractor is brought in.
The DA is calling on MEC Jacob Mamabolo to publish the restriction list, disclose the value of affected contracts, and explain why failed companies can still get government work.

Claiming to uphold the rule of law is not the same as enforcing it.
Premier Lesufi has still not published the outcomes of disciplinary processes against senior officials placed on 60-day precautionary suspension:

Arnold Lesiba Malotana, former Health HOD
Nontsikelelo Sisulu, Community Safety HOD
Mduduzi Malope, Community Safety CFO

Instead of clear outcomes, they were moved into other senior posts. Sisulu went to the Premier’s office. Malope went to Environment. Malotana went to COGTA — and has now been appointed City of Johannesburg HOD of Public Safety.
Due process cannot become a cover for silence. Residents deserve to know whether these officials were cleared, charged, or simply shuffled sideways while investigations continue.
The DA is tabling further questions and demanding that the internal disciplinary reports be made public.

DA calls for school applications to open by April and stay open until September.
The GDE only opened 2027 applications after June. With two days left before the deadline, parents are being rushed through a system already known for glitches, poor communication and placements that are not their first choice.
This crunch was avoidable. The DA has consistently called for applications to open by April so the department has enough time to process forms, fix technical problems and place every child before schools reopen.
Late applications are only part of the problem. Gauteng has built just 202 public schools in 32 years, while overcrowding and mobile classrooms keep growing. Learners cannot keep paying for failed planning.
Every child has a right to education. Placement should not be a last-minute panic.

Gauteng schools face a R117 million debt crisis — and our children will pay the price. 🚨

Our public schools are drowning in a staggering R117 million in unpaid municipal debt, putting electricity and water at some schools on the chopping block. Some are already facing disconnections and water restrictions.

Let's be clear: electricity and water are not luxuries. They are basic requirements for any functioning school. 💡💧

This crisis was exposed in a written reply by Education MEC Lebogang Maile to DA questions in the Gauteng Legislature. But here's the truly shocking part: the Department has never conducted a proper, consolidated assessment to check whether schools are even given enough to cover these costs.

In other words — the GDE is cutting school budgets and making funding decisions without knowing what it actually costs to keep the lights on and the water running. 🤦

Their proposed "solution"? Force cash-strapped schools to redirect money meant for teaching and learning just to pay off municipal arrears. That's not a plan — it's a recipe for an education crisis.

A DA-led Gauteng Government would:
✅ Conduct a province-wide audit of school operating costs
✅ Set up early-warning systems for schools at risk of disconnection
✅ Negotiate fair payment arrangements for arrears
✅ Ring-fence funding for essential services
✅ Review the R343.9 million Quintile 5 funding cuts
