SASCO CJC Ellis Park Branch

SASCO CJC Ellis Park Branch Student Movement SASCO is the biggest student movement in Africa.

It organizes students in institutions of higher learning striving for the transformation of not just institutions of higher learning but the whole system in order to achieve a non-sexist, non-racial, working class biased and democratic education system. It seeks to ensure the destruction of capitalist relations of production and the ushering of a socialist society.

I have distanced myself from students politics intentionally and I'm not available to lead any student political movement at any level, however it saddens me when I see comrades compromising everything we've done in ensuring that our branches from colleges are visible, vibrant and progressive.we worked very hard to change the perception around the TVET sector,we ensured that we are not only viewed as voting cows that are forever on top of the list when it comes to head counts, but viewed as activist who are also capable of leading ,nowadays cdes are selling their souls just for a bottle of black label, fighting each other not because they have different ideological views, but just because they are inspired to support a certain individuals who is by the way not from their branch to lead upper structures,i have noted that others "comrades" from traditional universities are being deployed to enrol in colleges just to manage processes,it also worth mentioning that we were once told that our branches are not recognised, labelled as college "bogus" branches, leadership claimed they don't even know where these branches are based, but today the very same branches are being visited on daily bases by the very same leaders from upper structures and are expected pronounce certain names. Its non of my business, but I think CJC branches must unite, defend the base, close all the ranks and pronounce one of their own for Regional,Provincial and NEC of SASCO,just like we did in our days..Hands off CJC,hands off!!

The year 2013 has finally reached its destination,as we bid farewell to one of the challenging years our branch has had to tackle head on lets remember that it has helped us grow as a branch , from working hard to ensure no student goes home unregistered, to results delaying which was a set back on our education,to draughting memorandums at a very short period of time, to strikes all in the name of education and to the loss of one of our own prof. taunyane, well the year wasnt all bad because we conquered comrades we even saw president Mohale Ramosunya climb up the Safetsa ladder to become the first President of that particular organisation, we launch yet another one of our sister branches troyeville which is in safe and good hands, victory was certain leading towards congresses

It's because of the undying spirit and support from our students that sasco ellispark branch was able to truimph through the obstacles, challenges and trying times.

I therefore ask that you continue supporting sasco as we continue to strengthen and heighten the struggle and as we realise the call for Free Quality Education.

Have a happy and properous 2014,take this time to reflect and i hope that we all come back in one piece and in that saying goodluck with all your results.

SASCO call for mobilisation for the
Free Education March
18 June 2013
The South African Students
Congress will be having a
weeklong Free Education
campaign that will be taking place
throughout the country and the
main intention is that of
accelerating our call for the
introduction of Free Education.
This Nationwide Free Education
Campaign will take place from the
22 to the 26th of July 2013.
The manner in which our march
will unfold is the following:
1. Campus Protests
These will take place on Monday
the 22rd of July 2013. Every
branch is to organise a campus
protest to the Vice-Chancellor s of
the institutions and College CEOs.
These marches will be based on
local grievances that students
might have on a campus basis.
2. Provincial Marches
These marches will take place on
Wednesday the 24th of July in all
the Provinces and they should be
provincially specific. The main
target for these marches is the
Department of Higher Education;
our memorandums here are
going to address issues that are
burning in the institutions in the
various provinces.
3. National March
The national march will take place
in Gauteng, in the City of Tshwane.
It will go straight to the
Department of Higher Education
and Training. It will take place on
Friday the 26 of July 2013. All
structures of the organisation will
be present in this gathering.
SASCO calls on all its members, its
organisational structures, the
formations of the mass
democratic movement and
general society to join this
accelerated call for Free Education.

SASCO Gauteng Statement on the Israeli Pianist

We hail the heroic students of Wits for blocking the performance of the pianist Yossi Reshef who was sent by the Israeli embassy to disturb our 2013 Israeli Apartheid week through performances geared to cover the murderous Israeli state.

This is a cheap and malicious trick by the Israeli lobby to undermine the solidarity work which south african students are have been embarking on throughout theIAW 2013 across our province to expose the gross human rights violations perpetuated by the apartheid state and to recruit new soles for solidarity with thepalestinian struggle.

This heroic students join a league of many brave students around the world who refused to stand by the sidelines during the height of repression against africans by the Apartheid government of South Africa. We believe that south africans, students in particular should repay these revolutionary debt to the international community by participating in solidarity work with oppressed people in the world and the palestinians in particular given the similarities of our subjugation.

We are aware of plans by the Wits Management to intimidate students who participated in the protest through unwarranted inquiries and threats of suspensions and would like to warn them that the blood of many palestinian children, mothers and father will be on their hands should any of the students be suspended.

We reiterate our support to the boycott divestment and sanctions campaign and commit to continue building academic and cultural relations with the palestinianpeople. We will work hard to raise funds for scholarships for palestinian students to study in our Universities as resolved by our 2012 National General Council.

RESS STATEMENT:

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign notes that the SABC and SAFM arranged to present a phone-in programme and debate between a distinguished visiting Palestinian activist, Prof. Mazin Qumsiyeh, and a representative from the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD), who undertook to present the Zionist perspective on Israel’s policies toward Palestinians. This was to have taken place just after the 9h00 news on SAfm on Tuesday 12 March 2013.

At the last minute, after having originally agreed to take part, the SAJBD withdrew its agreement and refused to participate. The programme was immediately cancelled by the SABC on the grounds that the SAJBD had been invited to ensure “balance” and that, following the withdrawal of those who would put the Zionist perspective, this “balance” no longer existed.

This is not the first time that Zionists have used this tactical ploy to silence those who disagree with them. In order to do this, it is of course necessary that the public platform would be provided by someone who sympathised with the Zionists and who thus could be trusted to play their shabby game with them. The obvious intention is to violate the constitutional right to the freedom of expression, freedom of the press and other media, and the freedom to receive or impart information or ideas while at the same time claiming to be seeking “balance”.

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign is completely unafraid to confront Zionists in any public debate – a debate which the SAJBD is clearly desperate to avoid. We believe that their evasive tactics further highlight the parallels between apartheid and Zionism. These are apparent at every turn and stone.

On its part, the SAJBD reveals itself – yet again – to be too craven to face in public, in front of an open microphone, or in any other form or venue those who wish to present the reasons why Zionism and the Zionist policies of Israel are racist, oppressive, and a violation of the fundamental human rights of the Palestinians.

Moreover, the action of withdrawing from a programme it agreed to take part in is itself a clear political statement. The SAJBD has had to rely on the SABC to provide it with cover to skulk behind, even though by its own act the SAJBD has itself forfeited any right to a claim of “balance”.

Further, the SABC is revealed as having not yet freed itself from its squalid role as the apologist for, and would-be sanitiser of, apartheid. It used to make the same bogus claim to “balance” when silencing those who opposed what the whole world condemned as a crime against humanity – just as it has now done in the case of Zionism.

None of this is surprising. In 2007 the SABC and the South African Jewish Board of Deputies entered into a formal agreement which – in summary – empowered the SAJBD to censor how the SABC presented affairs concerning the Middle East.

Racism in general, and Zionism in particular, cannot cope with the searchlight of democracy. The SAJBD is seeking to protect itself from being exposed by its critics, and thereby to sanitise Israel by attempting to subvert rights protected by the South African constitution. One of the most visible victims is the SABC itself, which is content to render meaningless in practice what it claims to be its editorial policies in its published Editorial Code. We point to statements it makes to the effect that it avoids promoting discrimination in its programmes on the grounds of political persuasion, and that it seeks balance by presenting relevant views on matters of importance.

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign condemns the cancellation of the interview with Proof. Mazin, and demands that the SABC honour the obligations and duties it boasts of.
