🏛️ Restoring a symbol of South Africa’s struggle for justice.

The JDA, on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, is refurbishing Chancellor House — the former home of Mandela & Tambo Attorneys and a key landmark on the Mandela Footsteps Trail.

Through projects like these, the JDA continues to invest in heritage-led regeneration, preserving the stories that shaped our democracy while contributing to the revitalisation of Johannesburg’s inner city.

🏗️🚉 Transforming Jabulani into a thriving urban hub.

Through strategic Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) interventions, the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) is creating a more connected, accessible, and economically vibrant Jabulani precinct in the heart of Soweto.

By integrating public transport, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, public spaces, mixed-use development opportunities, and improved urban environments, the Jabulani TOD is bringing people closer to jobs, services, education, and economic opportunities.

Did you know? The High Court Precinct Public Environment Upgrade (PEU) Project is an initiative aimed at transforming the public environment surrounding the Johannesburg High Court into a safe, accessible, and vibrant urban precinct.

The precinct is bounded by Lillian Ngoyi Street (north), Delvers Street (east), Helen Joseph Street (south), and Eloff Street (west). The objectives of the upgrade aims to elevate the precinct to reflect the dignity and functionality of the judicial system while supporting commercial growth, walkability, and informal trade.

🏗️ Taking Place: The Bertrams Multipurpose Centre secured and preserved so that construction can resume in the next fiscal framework.

Temporary mothballing is to protect the city from incurring any over expenditure. The City has taken a phased project implementation approach based on the budget available.

Substantial progress has already been made in establishing a major social infrastructure asset that will include community, youth, women's empowerment, senior citizen, childcare, recreation, and urban agriculture facilities.

Works Completed include:
- Reinforced concrete foundations and substructure completed.
- Ground floor structural frame completed.
- Reinforced concrete columns erected to multiple levels.
- Reinforced concrete beams installed
- Large sections of suspended concrete floor slabs completed.

This approach forms part of the JDA's Accelerated Infrastructure Programme, which seeks to deliver infrastructure efficiently, effectively and responsibly while safeguarding public investment.

♿🚍 A Step Towards Rethinking Movement and Redefining Universal Access!

The JDA has successfully completed the Universal Design Access Plan (UDAP), a comprehensive framework that will guide the City of Johannesburg in creating a more accessible, equitable, and user-friendly public transport system. The plan will now be tabled before the City's Section 79 Committee for consideration and Council approval.

Developed over 18 months, the UDAP assessed public transport infrastructure and services across the city, including Rea Vaya, Metrobus and other transport facilities, identifying opportunities to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities, older persons, parents with young children, and all commuters who may face mobility challenges.
