The GGDA Group Chief Executive Officer, Sthembiso Dlamini, recently conducted a site visit to Cassava Technologies following the company's R1.75 billion investment commitment in Gauteng.

The investment will support the expansion of fibre networks, data centre capacity, cloud and cybersecurity infrastructure, and the development of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Factory in South Africa.

Beyond strengthening Gauteng's digital infrastructure, this investment will help drive digital inclusion by expanding access to connectivity, supporting digital literacy, and creating opportunities for skills development that enable meaningful participation in the modern digital economy.

The project is expected to contribute to job creation across the ICT, engineering, construction and digital services sectors, while positioning Gauteng as a leading technology and innovation hub on the African continent.

Through strategic investment facilitation and project support, the GGDA continues to attract transformative investments that drive innovation, economic growth and long-term development.

Earlier this week, the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency, together with the MEC for Gauteng Department of Economic Development and the MEC for Gauteng Department of e-Government, conducted a site visit to the Equinix JN1 Johannesburg International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in the City of Ekurhuleni.

The Gauteng Provincial Government delegation continues to strengthen strategic partnerships in Bavaria, Germany, through engagements focused on innovation, sustainability, infrastructure development and economic cooperation.

The delegation met with Ms Tina A. M. Dangl, Director General for European and International Affairs and Strategic Planning at the Bavarian State Chancellery, to discuss practical mechanisms for strengthening the existing Gauteng–Bavaria Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The engagement focused on enhancing government-to-government cooperation, improving implementation mechanisms, and ensuring the MoU translates into practical programmes and measurable economic outcomes for both regions.

The delegation also visited the wastewater treatment facility in Bad Tölz to explore collaboration opportunities in sustainable water management and environmental infrastructure development. Discussions centred on advanced wastewater treatment technologies, water recycling systems, renewable energy generation linked to wastewater management, and smart infrastructure solutions that can support Gauteng’s long-term water security objectives.

Further engagements included a visit by Gauteng Department of Economic Development Head of Department Mr Motlatjo Moholwa and GGDA Group CEO Ms Sthembiso Dlamini to UnternehmerTUM, one of Europe’s leading centres for innovation and entrepreneurship.

Discussions explored potential collaboration opportunities with The Innovation Hub and the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC), particularly in innovation ecosystems, startup incubation, advanced manufacturing, skills development and technology commercialisation.

The Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA) hosted a strategic engagement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), focused on strengthening the link between research, innovation, and economic development in Gauteng.

The engagement reinforced Gauteng’s position as a province with the scale, institutions, and industrial base to lead Africa’s innovation economy.

Discussions focused on:
• Research-to-market pathways
• Venture development and innovation financing models
• Strengthening innovation commercialisation
• Addressing the innovation funding gap
• Advancing collaboration between research, industry, and capital
• Building globally competitive industrial and innovation ecosystems

The engagement further highlighted the importance of connecting research, industry, and investment to support industrialisation, economic growth, and long-term investment conversion in Gauteng.

The Gauteng Provincial Government delegation is currently undertaking a strategic trade and investment mission in Bavaria, Germany — one of Europe’s leading industrial and innovation economies.

Led by Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED) Head of Department Mr Motlatjo Moholwa, GGDA Group CEO Ms Sthembiso Dlamini, and Director General Mr Edward Mosuwe, the mission seeks to deepen bilateral economic cooperation, mobilise investment, advance technology transfer, and position Gauteng as Bavaria’s preferred gateway into Africa.

As part of the programme, the delegation engaged with Invest in Bavaria CEO Mr Christian Weber at the Atlas Building in Munich to explore a strategic institutional partnership between the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA) and Invest in Bavaria. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration in investment promotion, investor acquisition and foreign trade facilitation.

The delegation also met with Ministerial Director Prof. Dr. Frank Messerer at the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs to strengthen cooperation under the existing Gauteng–Bavaria Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Key areas of focus included automotive manufacturing, green hydrogen, renewable energy, trade and investment promotion, industrial innovation and skills development.

Additional engagements with IHK Schwaben in Augsburg, UnternehmerTUM, B*W – Bavarian Business Education Centre, and the Bavaria State Chancellery form part of the broader mission aimed at unlocking investment, strengthening institutional cooperation and accelerating inclusive economic growth.
