COMMEMORATION OF CAPTAIN CYRIL LEONARD FLEMMING

On Saturday, 11 October 2025, the Chairperson of the Council of Military Veteran Organisations South Africa (CMVO SA), Rear Admiral Rusty Higgs (SA Navy, retired), and I attended a solemn commemoration at the grave of Captain Cyril Leonard Flemming of the South African Air Force (SAAF), at the Thaba Tshwane New Military Cemetery in Thaba Tshwane. Also in attendance were the Director of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Juan Maree and a staff member.

The New Zealand Minister of Veterans’ Affairs, the Honourable Mr C. Penk — who also serves as Minister of Small Business and Manufacturing, and is a former member of both the Australian and New Zealand Navies — was in South Africa to attend a G20 Small Business meeting in Gqeberha. On his return journey to New Zealand, he stopped in Pretoria, where he, accompanied by a member of his staff, the New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr Hewitt, and the Deputy High Commissioner, Mr Neeham, laid a wreath at Captain Flemming’s grave.

During the First World War, No. 35997 Trooper Flemming served with the 24th Reinforcements, Mounted Rifles, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. In the Second World War, he served as an airman with the South African Air Force. Captain Flemming passed away at 1 Military Hospital in Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria.
