South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis remains one of the country’s greatest social and economic challenges.

Across South Africa, civil society organisations, NGOs and philanthropic partners continue to play a critical role in creating pathways to opportunity through:

• skills development initiatives
• job-readiness programmes
• entrepreneurship support
• mentorship and leadership development
• workplace exposure and experiential learning

These interventions are helping young people access employment opportunities, build confidence and long-term economic participation.

This Youth Day, we recognise the organisations and changemakers investing in South Africa’s youth!

What happens when philanthropy leaders from around the world come together to reflect, learn and collaborate?

At the recent CAF International Network Gathering in Bulgaria, our CEO, Gill Bates, led a session exploring the impact of the global network and how we can work together to strengthen philanthropy and civil society across borders.

One key takeaway: trusted partnerships matter. When we share knowledge, credibility and generosity, we multiply our impact.

Together, we can achieve more than any organisation can alone! Thank you to CAF and B-cause for creating space for these important conversations.

Africa continues to demonstrate the power of generosity.

According to the World Giving Report 2026: Donor Insights, produced by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), Africans donated an average of 1.6% of their income - the highest regional level globally.

Based on insights from more than 60,000 people across 105 countries and territories, the report explores what motivates giving and reveals that community connection, trust, and visible local impact significantly encourage generosity.

The findings offer important lessons for donors, charities, NGOs, funders, and policymakers working to strengthen civil society and build a culture of giving.

We thank CAF for this valuable contribution to the global philanthropy sector.

This World Environment Day, SAPF recognises the visionaries, innovators and changemakers across Africa whose ideas are helping protect both people and planet.

Nzambi Matee is transforming plastic waste into sustainable building materials through innovative recycling solutions that reduce pollution while creating economic opportunity.

Ludwick Marishane developed water-conscious hygiene innovation designed to support communities where access to clean water remains a daily challenge.

Arthur Zang pioneered solar-powered medical technology that expands access to healthcare in underserved communities while advancing sustainable innovation.

Across the continent, African innovators continue to reimagine what is possible, creating solutions grounded in resilience, sustainability and community impact.

Progress is driven by people bold enough to build differently.

We’re calling on civil society leaders across South Africa to make their voices heard.

The World Charity Insights Survey is a global study exploring the challenges, impact and future of the charitable sector - and it is critical that organisations from our region are represented.
Your insights help shape how global philanthropy understands and responds to the realities of civil society.

• The survey takes ±10 minutes
• Responses are anonymous
• Your input informs the sector globally

The future is shaped long before it arrives.

In South Africa, nearly half (49.7%) of the working-age population is youth aged 15–34, yet youth unemployment remains critically high. At the same time, the quality of childhood development, education and environmental wellbeing will determine the resilience of generations to come.

This June, we invite you to reflect on one question:
What does it mean to invest in generations - not only for today, but for tomorrow?

Your voice matters. Calling all charity and NGO leaders!

SAPF is proud to support the World Charity Insights Survey led by CAF (Charities Aid Foundation) and global partners across 35+ countries.

We encourage charities and nonprofits to participate so that the experiences of organisations in our region are properly represented in the research. Without sufficient participation, our sector may not be included in the Charity Insights findings.

If you work in the charity or nonprofit sector, please take 10 minutes to share your insights and help ensure every NGO and charity voice is heard.

Today, on International Nurses Day, we honour the nurses whose compassion, resilience, and service continue to hold communities together.

Nurses are more than healthcare professionals - they are advocates, educators, caregivers, and critical pillars of civil society.

According to the World Health Organization, the global nursing workforce grew to 29.8 million in 2023, yet deep inequalities in access to nursing care remain across regions (WHO State of the World’s Nursing Report, 2025).

Today, we recognise the individuals who continue to care, lead, and serve - often in the most challenging circumstances.

Join us in celebrating the nurses building healthier, more resilient societies every day.

Our CEO, Gill Bates, had the honour of attending the Trialogue Business in Society Conference 2026, representing Southern Africa Philanthropy Foundation.

This year’s theme, “Voices, Values, Vision”, strongly resonates with the work we do at SAPF — reminding us that meaningful impact begins with inclusive dialogue, is guided by clear values, and is sustained through a shared vision for the future.

Keynote speaker Shameela Soobramoney, CEO of the National Business Initiative, captured this powerfully: “When values lead, business follows.” We fully agree with this perspective.

Conversations like these are essential. They strengthen collaboration across philanthropy, business, and civil society - and help turn intention into meaningful, lasting action.

Looking forward to engaging with peers and contributing to the dialogue.
