Cllr Annette Deppe opened the meeting, congratulated all on their election and welcomed them to the meeting.

The Cllr Vasco da Gama, spoke to Ward Committee members on their responsibilities.
1. Assist ward councillors
2. Learn the boundaries of their wards
3. Learn what they can about their portfolio and who in the region can help them.

He reminded the Ward Committee members that as elected community members they represent every member of their ward including the business and social communities.

Did you know about the Johannesburg Student Council (JSC)? This is one of the Special Projects that lies within the Private Office of the Speaker.

Scholars from diverse environments come together once a month in the Johannesburg, Constance ‘Conny’ Council Chamber to discuss the complex civic issues that affect them.

The JSC gives the City of Johannesburg an opportunity to interact with future leaders, Cllr Vasco da Gama, provides robust support to this project.

The JSC is important for the City of Johannesburg Legislature because:

1. Creates awareness of the importance of civic responsibility through skills and leadership development

2. Establishing a platform for the youth to engage in an on-going dialogue on issues that affect them

3. It provides an awareness of local government and how it operates

4. It builds a sense of volunteerism in the youth

5. It plays a part in developing a new generation of leaders in South Africa

• Separation of Powers is a mechanism for fostering sound governance. Debate and engagement take place in Council and its Committees. The Executive are held accountable to the elected Legislature.

• Speaker of Council is the elected head of the Legislature. The Council Legislative arm: provides democratic & accountable govt; sustainable services; promotes economic & social development; promotes a safe and healthy environment to local communities.

• Legislature uses two forms of processes to monitor performance. Oversight, a crucial function which reviews the actions of the Executive. Accountability, a technical duty which monitors the actions and spending of public offices.

• Oversight & Accountability are interlinked. Accountability makes use of oversight to identify weaknesses and ensure that the Executive rectifies the identified issues.
Both mechanisms are extremely important to the functioning of the CoJ.

On Saturday 20 August the Legislature hosted the Women’s Empowerment Conference (WEC) 2022. This initiative was organised by Jnr. Cllr Stacey Fru. It focused on opening up new doors for motivated young women who are making big decisions on their future.
