Our primary function is to facilitate skills development by establishing learning programmes such as learnerships, skills programmes, internships and other strategic learning initiatives. This is done through the disbursement of grants to employers and training providers. We are also tasked with monitoring the quality of occupation-based training within the services sector scope as delegated by th

e Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). There are millions of South Africans, young and old, who need to learn new skills. Some are already in employment and need to improve their skills and to learn new ones so they can play a meaningful role in South Africa’s economy. The services sector, one of the economic sectors of the economy, contributes over a quarter of the GDP and employs over 3 million people. To maintain and growth the strength of this sector, the industry needs to employ competent and skilled labour force. The Services SETA bridges the gap between the formal education and training system and the workplace by facilitating and funding learning programmes that build skills-set required by industries (the world of work). To achieve this, the Services SETA works in partnership with public and private learning institutions accredited to deliver the training on its behalf.

Services SETA and CPUT celebrate 155 graduates 🎓

The Services SETA, in partnership with the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), celebrated the graduation of 155 learners whose academic journeys were previously hampered by outstanding debt.

The graduation, held on 29 May 2026, highlighted the power of collaboration between higher education institutions and skills development partners in creating opportunities for South Africa's youth.

Speaking at the ceremony, CPUT Vice-Chancellor Prof Chris Nhlapo emphasised the importance of strengthening partnerships between universities and SETAs to ensure graduates are equipped with industry-relevant skills and are ready for the world of work.

Nhlapo expressed appreciation for the Services SETA's support, noting that collaboration between universities and skills development institutions is critical in producing graduates who can meet the needs of the labour market.

Services SETA Acting Corporate Executive Manager Ms Duduzile Mwelase described education as the "great equaliser", highlighting its role in addressing inequality and transforming lives.

She commended the graduates for their resilience and determination despite financial and personal challenges and reaffirmed the Services SETA's commitment to supporting youth development, employability, student wellness and access to opportunities.

She further encouraged graduates to take advantage of the various opportunities offered through the Services SETA, including internship programmes designed to help young people gain workplace experience and improve their employment prospects.

Services SETA began collaborating with CPUT in 2016 through student bursary funding. Since then, the partnership has expanded significantly to include Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) initiatives, creating more pathways for students to transition successfully into the world of work.
