Golden threads and bright yellow feathers — the Cape Weaver is one of the most familiar and fascinating birds in the Kabeljous Reserve. 🐦💛

These energetic little birds are master nest-builders, weaving intricate hanging nests from grass and reeds, often over water to help protect their young from predators. Males build several nests during breeding season in an effort to impress potential mates — the avian equivalent of showing off your DIY skills!

The Cape Weaver feeds mainly on seeds, insects, and nectar, and its cheerful activity adds colour and movement to our wetlands and surrounding vegetation.

Moments like these are a reminder of why protecting the Kabeljous Reserve matters — every species plays a role in this unique ecosystem.

We would like to thank each and every person that attended the moonwalk last night. It was a huge success, and only because of each one of you! We appreciate the support with our boerie rolls, and the generous donations. This is what keep us going!

The weather was perfect for a gorgeous sunset, and thereafter a similar moonrise.

Lastly, thanks to each and every volunteer for the hard work and dedication. It does not go unseen!

A big thank you to the Kouga Municipality for cutting the grass at the overgrown parking, access areas, and picnic areas at the Kabeljous Nature Reserve. The KRAG volunteers appreciate the municipality's help and support!!

Join the Kabeljous Reserve Action Group (KRAG) for a special Sunset/Moonrise Walk on Monday, 2 February 2026.

Enjoy the magic of the reserve as day turns to night, and stick around for a tasty treat — a limited number of boerewors rolls will be on sale for R30.
