Golden threads and bright yellow feathers โ the Cape Weaver is one of the most familiar and fascinating birds in the Kabeljous Reserve. ๐ฆ๐
These energetic little birds are master nest-builders, weaving intricate hanging nests from grass and reeds, often over water to help protect their young from predators. Males build several nests during breeding season in an effort to impress potential mates โ the avian equivalent of showing off your DIY skills!
The Cape Weaver feeds mainly on seeds, insects, and nectar, and its cheerful activity adds colour and movement to our wetlands and surrounding vegetation.
Moments like these are a reminder of why protecting the Kabeljous Reserve matters โ every species plays a role in this unique ecosystem.
