Mayor Hattingh Bornman Executive Mayor of Kouga Municipality

As a municipality, we understand the importance of road maintenance.

That is why we continue to invest significant resources in maintaining, repairing and upgrading both our tarred and gravel roads, while appointing skilled contractors to ensure quality workmanship.

The same commitment is expected from all spheres of government.

The Provincial Department of Transport has a responsibility to maintain the roads under its control, and residents deserve to see the same urgency and investment applied to those roads.

Flood update:

Weston bridge at Hankey still overflowing and closed.

River levels did rise during the night, and water over our dam walls is still high and increasing slowly.

We do still want to ask that residents take extreme care, especially in low-lying areas along the rivers.

Our teams will continue to monitor the situation.

Motorists should please drive with extreme care when on our busy roads. Certain areas still have flood damage within our towns, and we ask motorists to avoid those roads.

I want to thank our staff for working extremely hard throughout the night to make sure that our residents are safe and flood damage is kept to a minimum.

If there are still areas where help is needed, please send our call center a WhatsApp on 0817609183.

Flood Update

Residents in low-lying areas along the Kromme River and Gamtoos River are strongly urged to evacuate to higher ground as a precautionary measure.

Large volumes of water are still flowing into both river systems from the catchment areas.

At this stage, it is difficult to predict how much further river levels may rise, and we want to ensure the safety of all residents and prevent any loss of life.

Community halls remain open and available for anyone who may need temporary shelter.

Please do not wait until conditions become dangerous. If you live in a flood-prone area, make arrangements to move to a safer location as soon as possible.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide regular updates.

Stay safe and remain alert.

Flood update:

All four our dams are still overflowing and levels are still rising. We are monitoring the river levels closely, but we will report before it gets dangerous to human life.

All our teams are out clearing roads and Stormwater to make it safe for residents to travel.

Those who need a place of safety can use our community halls.

Please report any further areas of concern on WhatsApp 0817609183.

Flood update

Several road closures remain in place across the municipality due to flooding. Motorists are urged not to attempt to cross flooded roads or low-water bridges.

The Gamtoos River remains a concern and is being closely monitored. Our teams remain on high alert and are continuously assessing conditions.

Residents along the Kromme River are advised to remain cautious and begin preparing in the event that an evacuation becomes necessary. The Impofu Dam is now spilling significant volumes of water, and river levels may rise as a result. No evacuation order has been issued at this stage, but residents should stay informed and be ready should conditions change.

Residents whose homes become flooded and who need assistance can make use of municipal halls for temporary shelter if required.

Low lying areas along the Gamtoos river mouth are asked to evacuate immediately. Water levels are rising and the Kouga and Loerie dams are spilling more and more.

Please also do not travel unless absolutely necessary.

Our teams are doing everything they can under terrible conditions to make it safe for residents.

We have an update from all areas in Kouga at 11h. New update will be given thereafter.

I had a very productive meeting with the residents of KwaNomzamo, where we discussed progress on housing and the future development of the community.

We are eagerly awaiting feedback from the Department of Human Settlements regarding funding allocations for the upgrading of informal settlements in KwaNomzamo and across Kouga Municipality. These projects are critical to improving living conditions, expanding access to basic services, and creating more sustainable communities.

As a local municipality, we have done the necessary planning and preparations and stand ready to move forward as soon as funding is confirmed. We remain committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that these important projects are implemented as quickly and effectively as possible for the benefit of our residents.

Thanks to the residents of KwaNomzamo for coming to this meeting. We look forward to engaging further as things develop.
