🌊🏄‍♂️ SA Masters Surfing Championships 2026 🏄‍♀️🌊

Last week, Rapid Emergency Medical Service (REMS) had the privilege of providing dedicated medical coverage for the SA Masters Surfing Championships 2026, held at the world-renowned waves of Seal Point Cape St Francis.

This highly anticipated five-day event brought together some of South Africa's finest surfing talent, attracting competitors, families, supporters, and spectators from across the country. Throughout the competition, our Advanced Life Support (ALS) personnel Toby Brown remained on standby, ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone both in and out of the water.

From the early morning heats to the final rides of the day, our crews were there for every wave caught, every wipeout, and every moment in between. Fortunately, the event showcased not only exceptional surfing but also a strong spirit of sportsmanship and community.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the event organisers, competitors, volunteers, and supporters who contributed to making the championships such a tremendous success. It was an honour to be part of an event that celebrates the passion, dedication, and talent of South Africa's surfing community.

Congratulations to all the competitors who participated and to those who stood on the podium after an incredible week of competition.

Thank you for allowing REMS to play a role in keeping the event safe.

We look forward to returning to the beach and supporting this fantastic event again in 2027!

🚨 Multi-Vehicle Collision on the N2 Near Gamtoos 🚨

At approximately 04:50 this morning, Rapid Emergency Medical Service (REMS) received multiple emergency calls reporting a serious motor vehicle accident on the N2 near Gamtoos.

Upon arrival, emergency crews found that two light motor vehicles and a taxi had been involved in a collision, resulting in the taxi overturning.

REMS paramedics, together with Metro EMS and other private emergency medical services, quickly established scene management and triage operations.

More than 15 patients were assessed and treated for injuries ranging from minor to moderate severity before being transported for further medical care where required.

🚑 Emergency personnel worked efficiently to ensure all patients received the necessary treatment while maintaining scene safety.

⚠️ Traffic Advisory: One lane towards Gqeberha remains closed, and motorists are advised to exercise caution, reduce speed, and expect delays in the area.

💙 REMS would like to thank all emergency services involved for their teamwork and dedication. We wish everyone affected by this incident a speedy and full recovery.

Successful Resuscitation

At approximately 06:00 this morning, Rapid Emergency Medical Service (REMS) was dispatched to a fishing vessel outside Port St Francis following reports of a patient experiencing severe chest pain.

An ECP response vehicle and an ALS ambulance were immediately mobilised.
Shortly before reaching the harbour, the patient went into cardiac arrest.

Our ECP, together with dedicated NSRI members, boarded the vessel and promptly initiated Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Upon arrival of the ALS crew, a second ECP joined the resuscitation efforts, ensuring a coordinated and high-level response.
Through continuous CPR, advanced airway management, and the administration of life-saving medication, the team achieved Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC) after approximately 20 minutes of resuscitation.

The patient was stabilised with good blood pressure and oxygenation, placed on a ventilator, and transported to the nearest hospital for further care.

We are proud to report that, approximately three hours later, the patient remains on ventilatory support, is showing spontaneous breathing efforts, and has demonstrated encouraging neurological improvement. He is currently awaiting transfer to a specialised facility in Gqeberha.

We extend our sincere appreciation to every member of REMS and the NSRI involved in this complex and time-critical operation. Your dedication, teamwork, and clinical excellence made this outcome possible.

This incident highlights the importance of training, preparedness, and collaboration in saving lives.

SERIOUS MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT LEAVES ONE CRITICAL

Early yesterday morning, 2 March, Rapid Emergency Medical Services (REMS) was dispatched to a serious motor vehicle accident just outside Humansdorp

Reports indicated that a vehicle left the roadway near the Humansdorp highway intersection, plunged down an embankment and rolled multiple times.

Several patients sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical.

On arrival, REMS Advanced Life Support Paramedics assessed and treated the injured.

A female patient was found in a critical condition with severe head and chest injuries. She had sustained a collapsed lung (tension pneumothorax) which required an immediate needle thoracostomy — a vital, life-saving procedure used to relieve pressure on the lung and allow it to re-expand.

Due to the severity of her injuries, our Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP) also performed a Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI) — a highly specialised advanced airway procedure — and placed the patient on a ventilator to take over her breathing.

The patient was stabilised and transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment before being airlifted to an upgraded facility in Gqeberha a few hours later.

The remaining patients were treated and transported to the local hospital with injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

The cause of the accident is currently under SAPS investigation.

🚨 Serious Stabbing Incident – Humansdorp 🚨

This past Friday, Rapid Emergency Medical Service (REMS) responded to multiple urgent calls reporting a serious stabbing incident at PZ Meyer Hospital in Humansdorp.

According to reports from the scene, a security guard noticed two individuals attempting to remove an air-conditioning unit from the hospital building.

Acting swiftly and bravely, the guard intervened in an effort to detain the suspects. During the confrontation, the suspects allegedly attacked him with knives, leaving him with multiple serious injuries.

Importantly, quick-thinking hospital staff immediately stepped in and initiated bleeding control before our arrival — actions that undoubtedly contributed to stabilising the patient in those critical first moments.

Upon arrival, REMS crews found the security guard with serious stab wounds to his chest and head. Our Advanced Life Support (ALS) practitioners immediately initiated advanced medical care, including rapid assessment, continued hemorrhage control, and full stabilisation.

The patient was successfully stabilised on scene and transported to hospital in a stable condition for further definitive care.

We can also confirm that no other security personnel on the premises were injured during the incident.

We commend the bravery of the security guard who acted to protect hospital property and potentially prevent further crime.

We also acknowledge the swift cooperation between hospital staff, security, and emergency services in ensuring the scene was managed effectively and safely.

Rapid Emergency Medical Service (REMS) team had the absolute privilege of visiting the Grade 3 learners at Stulting Humansdorp as part of their Life Skills theme: Basic Health Protection.

What an incredible morning! 👏
From exploring a real ambulance to learning essential lifesaving basics, these young learners were eager, curious, and ready to become future first responders!

🩺 Key focus areas from our session:
✅ Basic wound care – knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference.

✅ Biohazards & safety – understanding why we must protect ourselves from body fluids.

✅ Calling for help – when and how to dial the correct emergency number.

✅ First aid kits – what every home and classroom should have on hand.

And of course, the golden rule of the day…🏆
Don’t become a patient yourself!

Safety always comes first.

The excitement on their faces as they stepped inside the ambulance reminded us exactly why we love what we do. Inspiring young minds to stay safe, act smart, and help others is an investment in our community’s future. ❤️
