Today, 16th May, is National Endangered Species Day which aims to help people learn more about the environmental issues facing our planet. The recent Netflix documentary "Pangolin: Kulu’s Journey", which has done much to raise awareness of this rare, threatened species, aligns perfectly with this aim. The story and the conservation efforts involved have combined to shed light on the plight of pangolins and the vulnerability of the species.
For pangolin fans, this charming artwork of a ground pangolin on its hind legs with front paws clasped together is available on apparel and other products on Amazon. See https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F8RGRC3S?

To mark World Rhino Day (22 September), here's an optical art design of a black rhino created to spread an important message. The Chinese calligraphy in red loosely translates to "Extinction is Forever" - a reminder to those who buy rhino horn for supposedly medicinal (or any other reason) that there's no "back button" once a species is extinct. Black rhinos are critically endangered and their extinction is a real possibility if they continue to be killed for their horns. The artwork is available on apparel and other items from Amazon.

Good news! New information released by the IUCN shows that global rhino numbers are up, having increased to approximately 27,000 by the end of 2022 ⬆️

This positive news shows increases in the number of black and white rhinos across Africa and Greater one-horned rhinos in India and Nepal. But, populations of the two most threatened species - the Javan and Sumatran rhinos, remain dangerously low with fewer than 80 individuals remaining in the wild.

One success story is the Southern white rhino, which has increased for the first time since 2012. Black rhino numbers have also increased, with 6,487 individuals at the end of 2022, compared to 6,195 the previous year.

Of course, all rhino species remain under threat, particularly Javan and Sumatran rhinos in Indonesia. Despite pressing concerns, collaborative partnerships exist and will be essential for the future success of the two species.

T.G.I.F. - Thank Giraffe It’s Friday! Here’s lookin’ at you, kid! ❤️

Giraffe are frequently described as graceful, but we’d argue this photo qualifies them as downright regal, as well. Thanks to Michael Hadfield for this incredible closeup.

In 2014 the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) initiated World Giraffe Day to raise awareness of the giraffe’s plight in Africa. Ever since, the world has marked 21 June, the longest day (or night) of the year, as the day on which we celebrate our tallest animal.
From casual tourists to keen conservationists, we take giraffes for granted, expecting always to encounter them on safari. But their numbers are steadily decreasing and giraffes are now listed as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, with three subspecies listed as "endangered" or "critically endangered". Today (03 March 2023) is World Wildlife Day and what better way to make a statement about the importance of our wildlife than this outrageously colourful and attention-grabbing elephant image? From an original wildlife photo taken in Manyone Private Game Reserve in KZN, South Africa.
