GAUTENG PROVINCIAL LEGISLATURE HOSTS OCPOL CIVIC EDUCATION AND STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT IN LESEDI
Today, 3rd September 2026, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL), through the Oversight Committee on the Premier’s Office and Legislature (OCPOL), held a Civic Education and Stakeholder Engagement Session at the Ext 23 Hall in Ratanda.
The session was led by Hon. Ntombi Mekgwe and officially opened by the Lesedi Speaker of Council , Cllr Phindi Mpemvu, she was accompanied by the MMC for Corporate Services, Cllr Mapule Motsepe.
The programme provided community members with valuable information on the mandate and functions of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, particularly its responsibilities relating to law-making, oversight, accountability and facilitating meaningful public participation.
The session also presented the mandate of the GPL and explained how the Legislature exercises oversight over the implementation of government policies and programmes. Public participation was emphasised as an important component of democracy, with residents encouraged to actively participate in legislative processes and use available platforms to raise matters affecting their communities.
Representatives from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), also conducted a voter education session covering voter registration, special votes, the voting process and how citizens can check their voter registration status. The presentation further highlighted the importance of exercising the constitutional right to vote and participating in democratic processes.
During the interactive session, community members were afforded an opportunity to raise questions and concerns directly with the delegation. Numerous concerns were submitted to the leadership. 7Hon. Mekgwe and Hon. Makhubela responded to matters raised and indicated that relevant issues would be escalated through the appropriate Legislature processes.
This programme was aimed to bring Government closer to communities and creating platforms where residents can access information, participate in democratic processes and hold public institutions accountable.
The session concluded with closing remarks by MMC for Corporate Services, Cllr Mapule Motsepe expressing gratitude to the GPL and the community at large that came through.
