On , Singapore joined other Members of the Green Group (comprising Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Iceland, Slovenia, and the United Arab Emirates) in expressing the Group’s views on the importance of the ocean - Earth’s most vital life-support system.

Singapore commits to working with all our partners to restore the health and enhance the resilience of our oceans.

A safe, secure and sustainable ocean is essential to Singapore’s prosperity and resilience. We will work together with the international community to uphold international law, including navigational rights and freedoms as reflected in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and advance the effective implementation of the BBNJ Agreement for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity.

Today is Vesak Day. It has been a gazetted Public Holiday in Singapore since 1955. Spelt “Wesak Day” until the 1970s, the event commemorates the birth, enlightenment and attainment of nirvana of Siddharta Gautama Shakyamuni (Sakyamuni) Buddha. It falls on the full moon of the fourth lunar month.

Vesak Day is regarded as the most important day in the Buddhist calendar and a time for joy, peace, reflection, and renewal of one’s commitment to the Dharma.

In Singapore, in addition to visiting temples and performing the rituals, many Buddhists also observe a vegetarian diet, abstain from killing, and engage in acts of charity such as blood donation, visiting homes for the aged, and giving to the needy.

The High Commission wishes all Singaporeans, especially those in Southern Africa, and others who observe it, a blessed Vesak Day, filled with peace, wisdom and compassion. May your reflections bring clarity and your practice bring you closer to understanding, and may this day of light and compassion strengthen our commitment to kindness and harmony. 🪷☸️
