Huge congratulations to all our students who graduated this afternoon. It was wonderful to see our PhD, MSc and Honours students recognised for all their hard work.

A special thank you and congratulations also go to their supervisors, who guided and supported them throughout this journey.

🎉 Congratulations to Prof Emma Steenkamp on her appointment as the new Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology at the University of Pretoria! We're so excited to see where your leadership takes the department during your term as HoD. 👏

Celebrating the Women of FABI👩🏼👩🏻👩🏽👩🏾👩🏿

This National Women's Day, FABI honours the women who shape the institute: its academic staff, researchers, postdocs, students, and support teams. Their curiosity drives discovery, their dedication builds careers, and their leadership inspires those following in their footsteps✨.

This year also marks 70 years since the 1956 women's march to the Union Buildings, a reminder of what women can achieve when they stand together. In the lab, the field, the lecture hall, and in leadership roles, the women of FABI carry that spirit forward in forestry, agriculture, and biotechnology research.

Throughout August, FABI will be celebrating its women through various activities and thanking them for everything they bring to this community.

Prof Mike Wingfield and Prof Brenda Wingfield have recently been elected as fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology and are among 63 peers in the Class of 2026 Fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology.
