ANC WELCOMES SIU PROBE INTO ALLEGATIONS OF CORRUPTION AND MALADMINISTRATION AT UMZINYATHI DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY
The ANC Inkosi Bhambatha Region welcomes the President’s signing of Proclamation 305 of 2026, authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of serious corruption, maladministration, improper or unlawful conduct, and to recover financial losses in the affairs of the uMzinyathi District Municipality.
As the ANC we have always maintained and highlighted the sorry state of affairs at this municipality under the leadership of the IFP’s Petros Ngubane as mayor, where instead of channelling the scarce public resources towards essential infrastructure projects, the institution has been repurposed as a cash cow for officials and politicians.
It is a known fact that Billions of rands have been pumped into the coffers of the municipality in order to improve the community’s access to water, which is a basic human right in terms of the constitution. Instead, we have watched politicians and officials becoming richer and living lavish lifestyles, while community’s tabs continue to run dry.
Hence, the SIU would be remiss if it restricted its investigation solely to the municipal processes in the award of tenders, in fact our view is that the top leadership and senior management, both current and those who have since left the municipality must be subjected to lifestyle audits as it is plain for everyone to see that many of them are living well beyond their means.
We look forward to the process where farms, luxury vehicles and other ill-gotten gains are attached as part of the SIU’s process to recover financial losses suffered by the community of Umzinyathi at the hands of the IFP and its DA allies.
As the ANC, we will closely monitor developments around this investigation and, we urge everyone with information which may assist in the investigation to cooperate with the SIU.
