Vuyani Safe Haven - Graaff-Reinet - South Africa

Vuyani Safe Haven - Graaff-Reinet - South Africa Child & Youth Care Center for children in need of care and protection Our Vision:
A Safe Haven for Children in Need of Care and Protection.

Vuyani Safe Haven is the only Child & Youth Care Centre in the Dr Beyers Naudè district of the Karoo, offering a safe and nurturing environment for vulnerable children. Located in Graaff-Reinet, we provide care and protection for children who have lost their families or faced neglect and abuse. Background: Vuyani Safe Haven is the only Child & Youth Care Centre serving the expansive Beyers Naudè d

istrict in the Karoo, an area where farming and tourism dominate the economy. Unfortunately, poverty, unemployment, and a sense of hopelessness often result in high rates of alcohol and drug abuse, leading to family breakdowns and vulnerable children being left without proper care. Who We Are: Vuyani Safe Haven, based in Graaff-Reinet, provides safety, shelter, and care to approximately 35 children classified as Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs). This includes children who have lost their parents, those from child-headed households, or those removed from unsafe homes due to neglect or abuse. At our main home on Cradock Street, we care for about 24 children, from newborns to 11 years old. Our Thanduxolo house on Bourke Street accommodates our older children, aged 12 to 18, where we prepare them for independent living through our dedicated support programs. While the Department of Social Development covers roughly 50% of our costs, we rely heavily on the kindness of businesses and individuals, both locally and internationally, to fill the funding gap and provide the care these children need. Our Mission:
Vuyani Safe Haven provides residential care services in a homely atmosphere to children aged 0-18 years through:
• Enhancing the quality of life for children at all levels.
• Rendering developmental, therapeutic, and recreational programs.
• Providing access to schooling, education, and early childhood development.
• Facilitating successful reunification with biological families or placement in foster care or suitable alternative care.
• Assisting youth through an Independent Living Program.

Child Protection Week: 29 May – 5 June – “How to say NO” 💚🧡

This year's theme, "Working Together in Ending Violence Against Children," reminds us that everyone has a role to play in creating a safe and nurturing environment for our children.

On the 29th of May, we were privileged to welcome Chantelle Wevers from our local Magistrate's Court, who shared an empowering and insightful talk on "How to Say NO”.

At Vuyani Safe Haven, we believe it is important to create safe spaces for our children, not only within our homes but also to prepare them for the world beyond.

A sincere thank you to Chantelle for taking the time to educate and inspire us. By working together as families, schools, communities, and service providers, we can help protect our children and build a safe future.

This week, Vuyani celebrates with Charles van der Hever and the staff of the Chargo Group, operating KFC franchises across the Karoo, including Graaff-Reinet!

Chargo was recognised as the number 1 group on the African continent for Add Hope support at the Africa KFC Awards Dinner held at Sun City.👏👏👏

This achievement was earned by the dedicated Chargo staff who very faithfully ask customers to add an extra R2 to their bill - and thanks to every customer who says yes.

Since 2015, Vuyani has been a beneficiary of Add Hope, receiving vital annual support towards our food costs. This helps us provide nutritious meals for the children in our care and not rely only on the Department of Social Development subsidy.

Thank you for helping us care for children in need of care and protection.

Kindness arrived in Easter gift bags this week. 🐣💛

A heartfelt thank you to Ashleigh Harvey of the EC Queen Group, whose Midas franchise showed such thoughtful care here in Graaff-Reinet. A smaller group of our children, at Vuyani during the holidays, were delighted to receive beautiful Easter giftbags and pencil cases — bringing joy, excitement, and a beautiful reminder that they are cared for by their community.

Thank you, Ashleigh and Queens Midas for making Easter a little brighter for our children🧡

Joy, laughter, and life skills all in one pool.

This week, some of our children once again have the wonderful privilege of swimming lessons during the Easter holiday. Our heartfelt thanks to Anje Voster of Happy Hippo Swimming School for making this possible and for helping our children build confidence and safety in the water while creating happy childhood memories.

Not all of Vuyani’s children can go on holiday placements, so we make the most of these quieter days. This week, a group of our children is enjoying a fun, hour-long holiday programme each morning at the Fossil Centre. Huge thanks to Lindsay Kingwill and the Karoo Origins Junior Holiday Programme for giving our children the chance to learn, explore, and make special holiday memories!

Milestone Moment! Today we celebrate the breakthrough – a new passageway now connects our old building to the new one with the old bathroom ready for renovations!

With most of our children on holiday placements and the others at Thanduxolo, the timing is perfect. We’re in the final stretch – soon our children and staff will enjoy a brand-new kitchen, laundry, bathroom facilities, and an extra bedroom. The finish line is in sight!

What a joyful afternoon with the KFC team, who came to share Easter with our children. There were no bunnies or eggs, but something far more meaningful – the Gospel message of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection on the third day.

Dorian and the team also shared about Add Hope and the R2 they ask from each customer. After spending time with our children and seeing their home, they were deeply moved and recommitted to asking with purpose, even when faced with rejection.
In return, our children expressed their gratitude in the most beautiful way – by singing their special song, “Die Here het my mooi gemaak!”

Each child received a KFC meal, along with a bag of fruit and goodies thoughtfully prepared by the team.

Thank you, Add Hope, for your generosity – and to the KFC team for giving so much of yourselves to make this afternoon truly special.
