Happy World Book Day 2020!!!

What is World Book Day?
World Book Day (WBD) is a celebration to promote the enjoyment of books and reading. Each year, on
23 April, celebrations take place all over the world to recognise books as a link between the past and the
future; as a bridge between generations and cultures.
World Book Day is celebrated annually since proclaimed by UNESCO in 1995. The connection between
23 April and books was made in honour of the booksellers and authors by instilling a love of books and
reading.

The National Library of South Africa (NLSA) through its outreach unit, Centre for the Book, co-ordinates
the annual World Book Day celebration. Through the Centre for the Book, the NLSA strives to develop
and promote a culture of reading, writing and publishing in all local languages and further provide easy
access to books for all. This supports the objectives of World Book Day.

HAPPY WORLD READ ALOUD DAY!!!!!!!
World Read Aloud Day was established to boost reading for children and to strengthen the bond between an adult and child.LitWorld, a nonprofit addressing global literacy and human rights, has declared 5 February 2020 World Read Aloud Day.
South African organisation Nalโ€™ibali is built on the simple logic that a well-established culture of reading can be a real game-changer for education in South Africa. The organisation believes that literacy skills are a strong predictor of future academic success in all subjects โ€“ and children who regularly read and hear engaging stories, in languages they understand, are better equipped and motivated to learn to read and write.

Each year Nalโ€™ibali celebrates World Read Aloud Day by issuing a brand-new childrenโ€™s story in all 11 official languages for caregivers across the country to read aloud to their children. This year the campaign aims to read the story aloud to two million children. You can sign your pledge to read aloud and download a copy of the official story here: https://nalibali.org/WRAD-2020. You will also find loads of resources on their website.
