Not all diabetes is the same and knowing the difference matters.
Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body stops producing insulin entirely. It often develops earlier in life and requires lifelong insulin treatment.
Type 2 Diabetes is more common and occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough of it. Lifestyle, genetics, and other health factors can all play a role.
One of the biggest risks for diabetics, especially those using insulin, is hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar). This can happen suddenly and become life threatening if not treated quickly.
Signs of low blood sugar may include:
• Sweating
• Shaking
• Confusion
• Dizziness
• Aggressive or unusual behaviour
• Loss of consciousness
This is why hypo pens and emergency glucose treatments are so important. In an emergency, they can help raise blood sugar levels rapidly while waiting for medical assistance.
If you or a loved one lives with diabetes, make sure family, friends, teachers, and colleagues know:
• Where emergency medication is kept
• How to recognise the warning signs
• When to call for help
Preparation saves lives.
