Greetings to all students of the University of Zululand.

First and foremost, it is deeply concerning that all tuck shops within the university remain closed. At the same time, the SASKO-led SRC has remained silent, behaving like a headless chicken in a time that requires decisive leadership. SADESMO has actively engaged with tuck shop owners and the King Cetshwayo District Municipality. We are pleased to inform all students that, starting from next week, the tuck shops will resume normal operations.

It is equally troubling that many first-year students who are funded have submitted their laptops for verification but have still not received their book allowances. Meanwhile, the SRC, led by the so-called “ICE Boys” of management, has failed to act. All first-year students who have not yet received their book allowances must know that SADESMO will represent and support them until they receive what belongs to them. We will provide an update tomorrow evening with a confirmed date for the disbursement of these allowances.

Furthermore, it is disheartening that some departments have not appointed tutors despite the clear need. All faculties and departments may prioritize the employment of qualified postgraduate students as tutors. This is especially critical given the funding challenges faced by postgraduate students. Appointing capable tutors will significantly improve the university’s pass rate. The SASKO-led Academic Officer must either fulfill their responsibilities or resign with immediate effect—students deserve accountable leadership, not puppetry.

SADESMO also extends its best wishes to all graduands as they prepare for the upcoming graduation ceremony. We look forward to celebrating this important milestone with you.

Lastly, SADESMO encourages all students facing challenges to visit the SADESMO Square from Monday to Friday, between 10:00 and 16:00, for assistance.

Greetings to all University of Zululand students,

First and foremost, we wish to formally inform the student body of the temporary closure of the on-campus tuck shop.

This decision follows the shop’s failure to comply with the prescribed institutional trading policies, particularly those relating to health and nutrition standards. As SADESMO, we extend our sincere appreciation to the IFP led King Cetshwayo District Municipality and uMhlathuze Municipality and the Department of Health for their consistent oversight and commitment to ensuring compliance. The shop owners were given sufficient time, dating back to last year, to meet these regulatory requirements.

The tuck shop will remain temporarily closed until further notice.

SADESMO wishes to clearly state its position that mobile tuck shops should be permitted as a temporary solution, while the current operators work towards full compliance. In this regard, SADESMO has formally communicated with the Dean of Students and the Registrar, requesting approval for mobile tuck shops to operate as alternative service providers for students.

We further express our profound disappointment at the conduct of the SASKO-led SRC, which has chosen to celebrate this situation as a victory. Such behaviour is both insensitive and detached from the lived realities of students. The so-called “ICE Boys(SRC)'' leadership has failed to decisively intervene in critical student matters. Many students who depend on institutional support remain stranded at home despite being registered, and we are prepared to present evidence that exposes this failure.

It is deeply concerning that, for the first time, students funded under FTEN/NSFAS are proceeding to the Easter recess without receiving their book allowances. Equally troubling is that off-campus students are travelling home without transport allowances. This reflects a serious lapse in student leadership and accountability.

We wish to assure all students whose allowances are reflecting on the ITS system but have not yet been received that a confirmed disbursement date will be communicated tomorrow.

To those who have already travelled home, we wish you a peaceful and joyful Easter holiday with your families. To those who will be travelling, please do so responsibly, respecting yourselves and others.

SADESMO remains committed to serving and protecting the interests of students. We value you, we stand with you, and you will always remain at the centre of our struggle.

ATTENTION: ALL STUDENTS RESIDING IN PRIVATE ACCOMMODATIONS

Greetings fellow students,

We have received numerous complaints regarding issues affecting students who reside in private accommodations (PAs). Currently, there are some PAs without electricity, yet landlords are not making any effort to resolve the situation. This is deeply concerning, especially because NSFAS consistently pays allowances every month, but some landlords fail to provide even basic backup systems, such as generators, to ensure students live comfortably.

There are many ongoing challenges in private accommodations that require urgent attention. Bafwethu asihlali mahhala kulama Res u NSFAS ukhokha imali enjengemali, and therefore we deserve proper living conditions.

Another major issue ilena eyenziwa yilaba abasikhangisela lama Res. They promote these residences as being in good condition, but once students have moved in, they encounter unexpected problems that were never disclosed beforehand.

We kindly urge all students experiencing challenges in their private accommodations that negatively affect their well-being to join the WhatsApp group using the link provided.

The main aim of this group is to report issues related to private accommodations and to collectively come up with immediate solutions.

MEDIA STATEMENT
SADESMO UNIZULU BRANCH
DATE : 31 January 2026

Greetings to all University of Zululand students.

The South African Democratic Students Movement (SADESMO) takes this opportunity to congratulate and warmly welcome all first-year students who have successfully registered at the University of Zululand. We further encourage all prospective applicants to continuously monitor their CAO application statuses for updates.

SADESMO notes that the registration period for first-year students was scheduled to close yesterday. However, we urge students to await an official communiqué from the University of Zululand through its verified social media platforms, as registration is anticipated to be extended into next week. This remains the position of SADESMO until formally communicated otherwise.

All first-year students are further advised that Orientation has been postponed and will now commence on Tuesday, instead of Monday.

RETURNING STUDENTS

Registration for returning students will commence on Monday and will be conducted through both online and physical platforms.

Students who are familiar with the online registration process are encouraged to register online, as this will assist in the timely allocation of on-campus residence. Students who are not confident with online registration are strongly advised to visit the HP Laboratories to avoid errors such as incorrect module selection.

Students with outstanding debt exceeding R10 000 are advised to download the Payment Plan Form from the University of Zululand website, complete it fully, attach all required supporting documents, and submit it via the email address provided on the form.

Self-funded students who require on-campus accommodation must report to the Finance Department for payment, after which Finance will submit a list to the Housing Department confirming eligibility.

Students funded through bursaries or sponsorship are advised to verify that their names appear on the approved funding lists, which can be accessed at the Finance Offices or the Bursary Unit (FAB).

Returning students who dropped out in previous academic years and wish to complete their qualifications are advised to download the Re-admission/Returning Student Formfrom the University website, complete it, and submit it to their respective Heads of Department (HODs).

POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS

Honours applicants are advised to regularly check their email accounts, as many departments have already issued offers. Applicants who have received offers but do not intend to proceed with Honoursare urged to decline the offer on ITS, to allow students on the waiting list to be considered.

Applicants are further advised that some departments, particularly within the Faculty of Science, will conduct interviews, and applicants should prepare accordingly, noting that Honours spaces are limited.

MASTERS AND PhD STUDENTS

Prospective Masters and PhD candidates are advised to check their email accounts as firm offers have already been issued to successful applicants.

SADESMO wishes all students strength and success in their academic journey. We further commend students for continuing to uphold the vision of Dr Prince Mangosuthu Buthel, Founder of the University of Zululand, who firmly believed that education is a tool for liberation. Your commitment to higher learning remains a living demonstration of this noble vision.
