As Africa prepares for the African Green Hydrogen Summit (AGHS) 2026, to be held on 15 and 16 September at the Century City Conference Centre in Cape Town, the conversation is shifting from ambition to implementation. The focus is no longer simply whether hydrogen has a future. It is where that future will take root first and what tangible economic value it will create.

For South Africa, that question cannot be answered by looking at renewable energy resources alone. The real opportunity lies in understanding how hydrogen can solve practical industrial challenges that already exist today.

The Eastern Cape offers an interesting test case.

The East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ), through its Science and Technology Park (STP) and in partnership with the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) aimed at supporting Eastern Cape enterprises involved in h**p and cannabis beneficiation through biotechnology. The programme targets businesses that have already developed product prototypes and require support to advance towards pilot-scale, demonstration-scale and commercial production.

Innovation begins with an idea but transforming that idea into a viable product often requires the right support, expertise and enabling environment.

The East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ), through its Science and Technology Park (STP), invites entrepreneurs, innovators and SMMEs across the Eastern Cape to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for participation in its Prototype Development Support Programme.

This initiative forms part of the ELIDZ-STP's commitment to advancing research, technology development and innovation, while fostering entrepreneurship and supporting the growth of SMMEs within key economic sectors.

As part of its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme, ELIDZ today concluded its Women's Month activities with the handover of food parcels to women of Ward 46 through the established Ward 46 Women's Structure.

The event was attended by ELIDZ Chief Operating Officer, Mrs Ayanda Ramncwana, who encouraged the women to consider establishing a women-led initiative that they can own, drive and proudly celebrate each year as part of Women's Month.

Speaking to the group, Mrs Ramncwana highlighted the importance of women working together, supporting one another and creating something meaningful that reflects the needs and aspirations of women in their community.

As Women's Month comes to a close, ELIDZ extends its appreciation to the women of Ward 46 and to all women who continue to play an important role in their families, communities and workplaces.

This week, young people from across the Sarah Baartman District have been investing in their future through a three-day skills development programme hosted by the East London IDZ Science & Technology Park (ELIDZ-STP), in partnership with the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Makana Local Municipality and Eastcape Midlands College.
