Today is Red Book Day and what better book to raise than the one that started it all.

On this day in 1848, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels published The Communist Manifesto, a pamphlet written for the Communist League that would go on to shake the foundations of the capitalist world order. It appeared on the eve of revolution, within weeks, barricades were going up across Europe, from Paris to Vienna to Berlin. The ruling classes had reason to fear it then. They still do.

Born from the struggles of a rapidly industrialising world, where workers toiled in brutal conditions to make fortunes for factory owners and landowners, the Manifesto gave the working class something powerful: a history, an analysis, and a vision. It named the enemy. It charted the path forward.
177 years on, its words have never felt more urgent. The exploitation of working people, the concentration of wealth in fewer and fewer hands, the crises capitalism cannot solve, Marx and Engels saw it all coming.

The Manifesto has been translated into hundreds of languages, banned by governments from Tsarist Russia to N**i Germany, and carried into struggle by movements on every continent. And yet here we are, still reading it, still organising around it because it remains the sharpest tool in the working class arsenal.

“Workers of the world, unite!” wasn’t just a slogan. It was a programme. It still is.

This Red Book Day, pick it up. Read it. Organise.
