GO!Durbanโ€™s second launch fails to inspire hope - Haniff Hoosen - DA eThekwini Mayoral Candidate

Date: 07 September 2026
Release: Immediate

โ—พ๏ธThe second Go!Durban launch does little to inspire hope.
โ—พ๏ธApproximately R9 billion has been spent on the project and residents are still waiting for the buses they were promised seven years ago.
โ—พ๏ธThe City cannot expect residents to have confidence in another deadline without clear evidence that this time will be different.

The second launch of GO!Durban does little to inspire hope that eThekwini residents will finally see the long-promised bus service become a reality.

Seven years after the City made similar promises in April 2019, residents are once again being told that the service is coming, and this time with a commitment that it will be up and running by December.

After approximately R9 billion has been spent on the project, residents are entitled to ask why they are still waiting for the buses they were promised seven years ago.

The latest announcement says the City will procure 22 buses and have the service operational by December. That leaves roughly two months to procure the buses and get the service running.

This raises a simple but important question: have the buses already been purchased?

If they have, the City should be transparent and provide details of the procurement. If they have not, eThekwini must explain how it intends to procure 22 buses and have a functioning service operational within two months.

Residents have heard these promises before.

In April 2019, GO!Durban was presented as a major public transport solution for the city. Seven years later, much of what residents were promised has still not materialised.

The City cannot expect residents to have confidence in another deadline without clear evidence that this time will be different.

After R9 billion and seven years, eThekwini residents do not need more promises. They need buses on the roads.

FIBRE BREAK IDENTIFIED AS ROOT CAUSE OF EXTERNAL PREPAID ELECTRICITY VENDING CHALLENGE

A fibre break has been identified as the root cause of the technical challenge currently affecting the external prepaid electricity vending system. Tracing and locating the exact fault took considerable time; however, teams have now commenced repair work, with restoration of the vending service anticipated later tonight.

To accommodate customers who need to purchase prepaid electricity tokens, Sizakala Centres will operate until 4pm this afternoon, while Electricity Customer Service Centres will continue operating until 7pm. Customers are encouraged to make use of these centres to purchase their prepaid electricity tokens. These facilities take cash-only transactions.

The City urges customers to remain calm and assures them that the restoration of the system remains a priority. The Municipality appreciates customersโ€™ patience and understanding as teams continue working to resolve the technical challenge and restore normal prepaid electricity vending.

DA KZN congratulates Public Works and Infrastructure Departmentโ€™s MEC Martin Meyer for the first ever Clean Audit outcome

By Sithembiso Ngema โ€“ DA KZN Provincial Leader

The DA in KwaZulu-Natal congratulates the DAโ€™s Martin Meyer and his Public Works and Infrastructure Department for its clean audit by the Auditor General for the first time in the departmentโ€™s existence.

This is no small accomplishment as this is backed by findings of the departmentโ€™s own records and is a result of exercising accountability and enforcing tighter and reformed internal measures.

This is the result of the NEW KZN Public Works and Infrastructure Department. This achievement will play a huge role in streamlining the delivery of infrastructure across KZN.

The Department has conducted extensive consultations with its records and discovered there is no recorded finding of a clean audit in the history of the department and this translates to a commitment to becoming an evolved entity and one which can be seen as a trustworthy partner for the private sector, investors, developers and major financial institutions to effectively collaborate with for the aim of unlocking endless infrastructure development and growth potential.

It is also important to note when MEC Meyer was appointed two years ago, one of his key priorities was the attainment of a Clean Audit outcome through enforcing stringent financial controls and this has since been achieved.

This is the DA difference that you can expect when we take over governance after November Local Government Elections.

eThekwini residents are being forced to stand in long winding queues just to buy prepaid electricity.

Another basic service disrupted, another burden placed on residents. This is not how a city is run.

BREAKING NEWS! ๐ŸŽ‰

Today is a pretty special day. And it is official!

Under the Democratic Alliance, for the first time ever, our Department, KZN Public Works and Infrastructure, has achieved a CLEAN AUDIT! ๐Ÿฅณ

They told me it couldn't be done, and we did it!

Thereโ€™s a lot more to say about this, and believe me, I will say it. ๐Ÿ˜„

But for now, just let me say this: I am incredibly proud of what our Department has achieved.

This is the DA difference!!!

More to comeโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ‘€
