Municipal Institute of Learning MILE is a knowledge management initiative of eThekwini Municipality

The Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE), which is being run as a five-year pilot programme, has the following strategic objectives:
1.To facilitate the enhancement of professional and technical capacity of local government professionals on the African continent;
2.To position the eThekwini Municipality as a platform for innovating, learning and sharing with other municipalities, associations a

nd networks, both locally and internationally;
3.To leverage partnerships with tertiary institutions in order to promote collaborative research programmes that will ultimately improve the effectiveness of local government;
4.To provide a municipal technical support service to other municipalities in an empowering and innovative manner; and
5.To co-ordinate the internal knowledge management agenda within the eThekwini Municipality.

The CPUT-Botswana Students’ Summer School Programme is currently underway at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

The Programme brings together students, academics and local government practitioners for a week-long International Academic Excursion. The programme is co-hosted by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), City of Cape Town, and facilitated by MILE’s Dr Collin Pillay.

The primary objective is to expose students to international best practices in urban and regional planning. The focus for the week is on sustainable urban development, urban regeneration, informal settlements upgrading, environmental management and transport planning.

🌅 Day One of the Land Invasion Master Class has come to an end following a full day of insightful presentations, discussions and knowledge exchange.

Today's programme explored land governance, unlawful occupation, court processes, hijacked buildings and the complex relationship between human rights and property rights.

📍 Day Two continues tomorrow, 9 September 2026, with a focus on prevention, technology, enforcement, municipal response planning and good practices.
