The KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulatory Authority (KZNERA), in partnership with Dannhauser Local Municipality and other stakeholders, hosted a Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Campaign at the ZCC Church Hall in Fairbreeze, Ward 13, Dannhauser, to mark International FASD Awareness Day.
Observed annually on 9 September at 09:09, the day highlights the nine months of pregnancy and the importance of abstaining from alcohol throughout pregnancy.
The campaign focused on educating and empowering the community about the serious and lifelong effects of alcohol exposure during pregnancy, which can affect a childās physical, mental and behavioural development. The importance of early intervention, support for affected children and families, and community involvement in protecting pregnant women and unborn children was also emphasised.
As the provincial regulator of the liquor and gambling industries, KZNERA also raised awareness about the risks associated with illegal and unregulated gambling, including financial hardship and family instability, which can contribute to other forms of social harm.
Dannhauser Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr B.A. Radebe, delivered a key address, while expectant mothers received goodie bags as a gesture of care and support from local liquor traders and the Mayor.
KZNERA continues to play an important role in promoting healthier communities and protecting future generations from alcohol- and gambling-related harm.
