SADESMO STATEMENT ON FEE INCREMENT AND ENROLLMENT OF FIRST YEARS.
Fellow greetings to all, we been alerted about the unjust increment of fees and the low enrollment of first years students.
First years enrollment:
It is with sadness that UKZN will this year enroll only 8% of students who applied to study. UKZN is one of the best University in Africa but we find that there are students who will be declined an opportunity to study in UKZN due to the number of enrollment which is 8%. We as SADESMO propose an increment of this enrollment to 20% to allow deserving students an opportunity to study in UKZN.
Tuition increment:
It is again a shock for UKZN to increase tuitions, this increment had been done every year but there is almost low increase on the service that they provide when it comes to academics. With this increase of 5% we expect UKZN to implement programmes that will assist students e.g upgrade libraries including books and journals, introduce mentors to all modules, hire compete lecturers.
We always priorities education which is why this increment took us as a shock.
Residence fees increment:
It is again a shock that UKZN has a nerve to increase the amount of residence by 8%, UKZN has increased the amount of residences by over 80% in a period of 4yrs. It took as a surprise because the same residences are not in conditions of a student. You will find that two students are living in a single room, there is no proper wifi network, there are no study desks in some rooms, students are sleeping in 3 sleepers, they share a fridge with their neighbors, not to mention the safety.
With the above we aimed to make students aware of the continuity of unfairness treatment provided by UKZN and plead to the SRC to engage with relevant stake holders on the issue before 3rd of February.
Kindly regards
SADESMO
