We visited the family of the late Grade 3 learner from Lerutle Primary School in Daveyton today. There are no words that can truly comfort a family facing such a devastating loss. As a parent and as a member of this community, my heart is heavy. We stand with the family in their grief and we share in their pain.

As we mourn, we also honour the life of this young soul. May the family find strength in the love that surrounds them, and may the young learner rest in eternal peace.

We convened the Gauteng Sport Indaba 2026 to reaffirm sport as a powerful driver of economic growth, youth development, job creation and social cohesion.

Through stronger partnerships and a shared vision, we are building an inclusive, transformed and thriving sporting economy that leaves no one behind.

What a remarkable weekend it has been for Gauteng, a province confidently taking its place on the global stage.

The energy of the LIV Golf was unmistakable. This is not traditional golf. It is a bold, modern sporting spectacle. The signature shotgun start, where all players tee off simultaneously, set the tone for a fast-paced, high-intensity experience. Fairways lined with vibrant, engaged crowds, the pulse of international DJs, and live performances by world-class artists transformed the tournament into a fusion of sport and entertainment of true international status.

Alongside this, Gauteng hosted the Global Citizen Festival, headlined by Doja Cat, reaffirming our ability to attract and deliver global cultural moments. At the same time, we gathered in Sharpeville to mark Human Rights Day ; grounding this extraordinary weekend in reflection, memory and purpose.

Together, these moments tell a powerful story. Gauteng is a province that can seamlessly host events of international magnitude while remaining deeply connected to its historical and social responsibilities. From fairways to festival stages, and places of remembrance, we continue to demonstrate that ours is a province of excellence, diversity and undeniable global appeal.

Earlier today, I convened the Joint EMT & Political IGR Forum at Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg ; a session of accountability and decisive engagement.

Directors presented measurable plans; MMCs raised on-the-ground challenges. We interrogated, aligned and set clear expectations.

The Forum reinforced the need for stronger collaboration, smarter budget use and greater support for local sports, tourism and heritage. I emphasised proactive resource use, nurturing local talent and leveraging museums and events to create jobs, drive tourism and grow Gauteng’s economy.

We leave with clarity, urgency and a shared commitment to real impact for our people.

Our Constitution declares, without qualification, that dignity, education, healthcare, housing, food, water, and social security are not privileges reserved for the wealthy or the well-connected. They are rights, fundamental rights for that matter. Rights that belong to every child in Sebokeng, every young person in Boipatong, every grandmother in Evaton, every worker in Vanderbijlpark, every dreamer in every corner of this province. Rights that are not gifts from government to be given and taken away, they are the inheritance of every South African, guaranteed by the supreme law of this land.

Sharpeville is a wound in our history that became a turning point; a site of pain that became a source of power. Each year we return, this ground asks something different of us. Today, it asked more than remembrance, it asked for reckoning. It asked whether the freedoms forged in its name are lived in the daily realities of its people.

At the Gauteng Provincial Government Human Rights Day gathering - voices lifted in song, communities united, young people stepping forward with confidence. What we plant, and must be deliberate about, is a future that sustains that dignity, advances restoration, and secures opportunity for every child.
As we leave here today, let us carry with us not only the weight of memory but the fire of resolve. The 69 did not fall so that we could hold annual ceremonies and return to business as usual. They fell so that we would build a country where no one is ever again shot for asserting their humanity. As we celebrate thirty years of our Bill of Rights, we must go beyond celebrating with speeches, this must be a checkpoint at which we must measure our delivery with honesty, our progress with pride, and our shortcomings with urgency.

At Phelindaba Cemetery, I stood alongside the families of the fallen where memory is not history, but lived reality. The air was heavy with remembrance as we honoured the 69 lives lost on 21 March 1960.

From there, we moved to the Human Rights Memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony, each step a quiet reminder that the freedoms we hold today were paid for in blood.

Today begins here: in reflection, in dignity, and in a renewed commitment to build a South Africa worthy of their sacrifice.
