[WATCH] Tembisa Hospital pays tribute to hardworking nurses

Tembisa Hospital hosted International Nurses Day as a means of paying homage and honouring nurses who continue to go beyond the call of duty in their work. The function was held on Thursday, 11 June 2026 at the hospital sports ground.

International Nurses Day was celebrated under the theme, "Our Nurses, Our Future. The economic power of care."

Keynote speaker Dr Kagiso Tukisi, who is an accomplished professional nurse, midwife, neonatal specialist, researcher and nursing leader spoke to how Tembisa Hospital nurses showed commitment and dedication during the fire at the Emergency Department in April 2025. He also urged nursing managers to attend to study leave on time which allows nurses to study and learn innovative ways to assist in the nursing sector.

Acting CEO Rianna Louw also added how nurses are the backbone of the hospital. She said nurses are on the bedside of a patient on a daily basis. They are not just rendering a service at the hospital but they are saving lives.

The event included a prize giving ceremony for nurses who have continued to go beyond the call of duty in discharging their work.

International Nurses Day is celebrated globally every year on 12 May.

Tembisa Hospital pays tribute to hardworking nurses

Tembisa Hospital hosted International Nurses Day as a means of paying homage and honouring nurses who continue to go beyond the call of duty in their work. The function was held on Thursday, 11 June 2026 at the hospital sports ground.

Tembisa Hospital raises awareness on hypertension

The Tembisa Hospital physiothrapy unit is running a campaign on hypertension. The team addressed patients on what hypertension is about at Surgical OPD and Eye Clinic on Wednesday, 10 June 2026.

The team broke down what hypertension is, what makes the high blood pressure high, symptoms and measures to control high blood pressures. The aim being to have an informed society on hypertension, so that patients can take steps towards high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is when the pressure of blood pushing through your blood vessels stays too high over time.

Poor diet, high salt in food, lack of exercise, gender (females more after menopause due to hormone changes, high stress, being overweight and high blood pressure in your family are the main causes of high blood pressure.

Symptoms can be in the form of headaches, blurry vision , dizziness, difficulty breathing, confusion, vomiting, bussing in the ears and nose bleed.

To control one’s blood pressure. It is important to take medication as prescribed, decrease stress, maintain healthy weight, decrease salt in food and decrease the intake of alcohol and caffeine.

It is import t to know your blood pressure. Normal blood pressure value : 120/80 and high blood pressure value is 140/90.

Tembisa Hospital observes Child Protection Week

The Tembisa Hospital Social Work unit spent the week educating patients about , under the theme"Working together in ending violence against children".

In South Africa, Child Protection Week is an annual awareness campaign from 29 May to 5 June, the week focuses on promoting the rights, safety, and well-being of children.

Key areas of focus for the 2026 observance include protecting children from online threats, strengthening statutory r**e case management, and preventing school violence.

Tembisa Hospital Commemorates World Hand Hygiene Day

This year’s theme, “Action Saves Lives” emphasizes the critical role that simple hygiene practices play in protecting health and saving lives.

The Tembisa Hospital Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team has begun the annual flu vaccine drive! The team started vaccinating both staff and patients on Wednesday, 22 April 2026.

IPC Operational manager Siyabonga Zulu speaks on the importance of getting a flu vaccine particular people who are on chronic medication. He reminds everyone that getting a flu vaccine is the best way to prevent the flu and its complications for almost everyone. The flu vaccine can lower the risk of getting the flu.

The team is stationed in the pharmacy, Paediatric OPD, Medical OPD and Masakhane Clinic.

Tembisa Hospital kick-starts flu vaccine drive

The Tembisa Hospital Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team has begun the annual flu vaccine drive! The team started vaccinating both staff and patients on Wednesday, 22 April 2026.

Getting a flu vaccine is the best way to prevent the flu and its complications for almost everyone. The flu vaccine can lower the risk of getting the flu.

The team is stationed in the pharmacy, Paediatric OPD and Gynaecology OPD.

TB Awareness roadshow tackles the psychology of being sick

The Tuberculosis awareness roadshow is increasing the tempo as it delves into the topic of the psychological impact of being sick on staff members. The team comprising of Masakhane Clinic, Infection Prevention and Control, Occupational Health and Safety members addressed administrative staff on Tuesday, 24 March 2026.

Clinical psychologist Thuli Mdluli said that often people put more focus on the medical symptoms and complying with the treatment and often forget about the emotional impact of being sick. Mdluli drew a picture of a patient who has to deal with accepting that they are ill, they also have to deal with the issue of isolation that make them feel unwanted - all of which has a psychological impact on the patient. She advised staff members to seek psychological assistance as part of the healing process.
