Arderne Gardens

Arderne Gardens The finest collection of exotic tree species in a public garden in South Africa.

The Arderne Gardens were established in 1845 by Ralph Henry Arderne, a successful timber merchant originally from Cheshire, England, who acquired the land in Claremont where he built his home, known as The Hill. He collected plants from all over the world and in time the garden became famous. Development of the garden was continued by his son, Henry Mathew Arderne and the garden has been admired a

nd appreciated by the citizens of Cape Town as a place of exceptional beauty for well over a century. The Friends of the Arderne Garden is a non-profit organization, dedicated to the preservation and development of the gardens.

A new gateway welcomes visitors to Arderne 🌿 On February 10th, 2026, FOTAG completed installation of a beautiful entrance arch just in time for our annual Fellows’ Party. This meaningful addition is a gift from the late and much-honored FOTAG Committee Member Hank Lith. It was designed and engineered by FOTAG Committee Member Rose Meny-Gibert and Chris Meny-Gibert, with installation overseen by Garden Manager and Horticulturalist Paul Barker ()

The Friends of the Arderne Gardens, in collaboration with the Executive Mayor of Cape Town and representatives from the Office of Consul of Japan in Cape Town, yesterday planted a Ginkgo biloba (Maidenhair tree) in the Arderne Gardens in commemmoration of the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.

The planting of a symbolic tree is a living tribute to the victims and survivors of the 1945 Hiroshima tragedy, reflecting hope, healing, and global unity. The tree was grown from the seed of a Ginkgo tree that was a survivor of the nuclear blast and radiation.

This occasion underscores the importance of peace and environmental stewardship, with the Arderne Gardens serving as a fitting backdrop for this meaningful gesture.🌴🌳🌿🌳🌱

Introducing Orius bugs to control whitefly, thrips, and aphids—combined with Sweet Alyssum to support them—is a clever and eco-friendly pest control method. Kudos to Andile and the team for cultivating a healthier, more resilient garden.
