XSIT XSIT is an effective, environmentally friendly foundation of an IPM programme for FCM suppression For more information visit our website.

XSIT makes use of the sterile insect technique (SIT) methodology to suppress FCM within agricultural areas focusing on citrus, table grapes and stone fruit production in the Eastern, Western and Northern Cape Provinces of South Africa. With South Africa being the worldโ€™s second-largest citrus exporter and a zero-tolerance for phytosanitary pests in the global export market - XSIT ensures local pro

ducers can remain globally competitive by providing a platform to which an integrated pest management (IPM) programme can be overlaid. In principle, SIT is a tool which can be used in an IPM programme whereby masses of FCM are reared, sterilized, and released in areas where FCM is a problem. Our production facility is located in Citrusdal where millions of moths are reared for distribution across more than 18 000 hectares of fruit located in the Oliphants River Valley, Breeder River Valley, Hex River Valley, Gamtoos River Valley, Sundays River Valley, and Kakamas. XSIT is a highly effective organic and scientific approach to suppression of FCM, where data analysis and meticulous quality control form part of every step of the process to ensure sustained and consistent improvement of FCM suppression.

Behind every crate of quality citrus is a season of care, precision, and protection. Our team is out in the orchards, working on the ground to keep FCM pressure low and growers ahead.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ A small moment in the orchard with a big impact on the overall area.

This sterile False Codling Moth (FCM), released as part of XSITโ€™s Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) programme, landed briefly on one of our team members during field work.

FCM are mass-reared and released to compete with wild FCM. When they mate with wild FCM, no viable offspring are produced, suppressing the pest population over time without harming beneficial insects or the environment.

Itโ€™s precision pest management in action.

Science you can see. Impact you can measure.

โš ๏ธ SIT remains one of the strongest tools for FCM population suppression, especially when used area-wide.

Consistent sterile FCM releases help reduce pest pressure, protect fruit, and support a more stable season ahead. This enables growers to maintain long-term population suppression, without residues and without the development of resistance.

๐ŸŽ„Happy holidays from XSIT!

As we wrap up another year, weโ€™d like to thank our growers, partners, and colleagues for trusting XSIT as part of your False Codling Moth management programmes.

Wishing you a restful festive season and orchards that stay just as peaceful. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŠ

๐ŸŒฑ Grow smarter, not harder, with our Foundation Programme for FCM management in citrus.

Effective False Codling Moth (FCM) control starts with being proactive, and timing is everything. Our Foundation Programme provides a structured, year-round approach to help growers stay ahead and protect orchard performance.

What the programme includes:
โœ… Year-round: Adult moth monitoring inside and outside the orchard
โœ… Year-round: Orchard sanitation monitoring, including in-tree and dropped fruit, combined with best-practice sanitation to keep orchards clean
โœ… Sepโ€“May: Strategic SIT releases using an area-wide approach to suppress FCM populations
โœ… Novโ€“Aug: Infestation monitoring to identify hotspots and determine if corrective sprays are needed
โœ… Virus sprays: Timed according to flight peaks to target periods of highest infestation risk

FCM management doesnโ€™t have to be guesswork. Follow the programme, reduce pressure, and protect your orchards with confidence.

โ˜ข๏ธ Unlike chemical pesticides, XSITโ€™s Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) targets only one species: the False Codling Moth (FCM).

Sterile FCM moths are released into orchards to find wild FCM moths, steadily reducing the pest population. Every successful mating event actively suppresses the next generation of the pest.

Because SIT is species-specific, it doesnโ€™t harm beneficial insects or any other organisms in the orchard. And with no chemical residues on fruit, soil, or water, growers avoid residue-related export risks entirely.

This is why XSITโ€™s SIT programme fits seamlessly into integrated pest management (IPM) frameworks and aligns with international sustainability standards like GLOBALG.A.P., giving growers a future-proof, environmentally responsible alternative.
