UDM Member of Parliament Thandi Nontenja says the recent audit outcomes by the Auditor General of South Africa (AGSA) highlight serious governance failures in local government. Of South Africa’s 257 municipalities, only a few consistently achieve clean audits, while weak controls and irregular expenditure remain widespread.

Ms Nontenja also welcomed the AGSA’s decisive use of its extended powers, including the issuing of a R4.6 million certificate of debt against the Municipal Manager of the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality. She said rebuilding public trust requires ethical leadership, strong oversight and real consequences for governance failures.

UDM Member of Parliament, Thandi Nontenja, has raised serious concerns about ongoing fraud within the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). In February 2026, two individuals, including former SASSA employees, were arrested for allegedly defrauding the agency of R4.9 million through the unlawful processing of social grants.

She warned that the case highlights loopholes in the biometric system and weaknesses in recruitment and vetting processes, calling for stronger oversight to protect the integrity of the social grant system and the beneficiaries who rely on it.
