Social Work Connect

Social Work Connect A platform for professionals and communities to be informed and connect for collaboration. Together, we can move mountains!

Social Work Connect aims to be a primary online resource platform for social workers in South Africa. SWC aims to:
- Provide information about training workshops, conferences, fundraisers and events of interests that take place in and around South Africa that will assist in the continuous professional development (CPD) of a social worker;
- Provide information about any employment vacancies that

may be available for social workers through this platform;
- Be the primary platform for networking to occur across the social work fields of service. We believe that in order for social development to occur, we need to work together with organisations, role-players and stakeholders in order to achieve true development;
- Share relevant articles of interest highlighting a particular field of service to assist in a deeper understanding of the field being highlighted. If you are an organisation or individual that has any upcoming workshops/seminars, training and/or conferences that may be of interest to other social workers, please send the details and/or flyer to [email protected] so that we may share it with this network. We also want to show our love and support for all social workers from time to time and will strive to uplift our social workers through words of encouragement and praise as much as possible. We know how the process of social work can often tug heavily at the heartstrings of those involved. All feedback is always welcome so feel free to say hi by popping us an email if you so wish or message us via this page too.

We haven't posted in a while but hope that everyone is doing well and surviving this upside-down year!
The social work profession has certainly been thrown into the spotlight of this pandemic as professionals find themselves overwhelmed with intense cases. When assessing clients currently, social workers can't avoid the context of the pandemic in assessment and how it has affected the client's coping abilities. This being said, social workers are confronted with their own pandemic stories and we hope that they are looking after themselves during this time too.

Thank you to all the amazing social workers out there on the frontline! We see you and we salute you! Stay safe!

To get your week off to a good start, we found an amazing resource for social workers in practice, that we had to share with you: http://www.socialworkerstoolbox.com/

Feel free to share with any social workers or professionals, who will be able to use it.

Remember a social worker is only as good as their resources and networks.

Have a good week!

Over 200 worksheets, assessment tools, information handouts, storybooks and games; all sorted into thematic categories such as mental health, domestic abuse, CSE, adoption etc.

Social Work Connect was invited to facilitate a workshop on stress, forgiveness and healing for survivors of gender based violence (GBV) on Saturday, 4 May in Arniston. Founder, Marion Thomas, created and facilitated the workshop, which was part of a weekend programme that was coordinated by the False Bay Diocese of the Anglican Church. This is part of their ongoing initiative to assist survivors on their path to healing.

Thank you to the False Bay Diocese for inviting SWC to conduct the workshop and to be a part of your wonderful initiative!
God bless you in your work.

Feedback from participants:

(The facilitator was) “very professional and with great sensitivity towards the group”.
~ Janeta

“The fact that we were reminded who we were and the positive way in which the programme was presented was most enjoyable!” ~ Dawn

“You make me feel so good again. Just to know that I am a woman and this is me!”
~ Eleanor

Many people think they know what social workers do but few understand the real challenges that are faced in the field and the responsibilities social workers carry long afterwards.

"Social work is about facilitating the challenges and strengths of little systems—like people—with the challenges and strengths of big systems—like communities, governments, countries".

Someone once said that social work is that place “where the individual and society reach out for one another.”

Think about that.

That’s a BIG idea.

So, you’re always thinking about at least two things at the same time. How to help both the little guy and society at the same time. One has to be able to think like a juggler, or a surfer, or any master of multiple dimensions in motion.

Let's put it into context...

A man falls into a ditch and you help him out: you’ve helped a man out of a ditch.

Another man falls into the ditch and you help him out: you’ve helped another man out of a ditch.

Another man falls into a ditch and the social worker, reaching down to help the man, cries out to all those who will listen:
“Hey, people!
Folks keep falling into this ditch!
Can we all get together to think about doing something about this?
How about a bridge?! Or a tunnel?! Does this ditch need to be here?
Could we lay a pipe in there and cover this thing up?
Waddya all think?”
