Today is International Literacy Day 📖 ❤️
Let’s get our kids reading!
Reading is becoming increasingly important in a screen-filled world because reading helps increase attention, vocabulary and the ability to sit with a thought.
If there is ONE book I would recommend it is AESOP’s FABLES!
A R200 illustrated copy of the book will outlast most toys
The same book can be used at the different stages of childhood:
Read these stories to your children when they can’t read yet.
Then let your children read the stories to you when they are learning to read.
The fables are simple and short.
When the kids are older, they will read these stories by themselves but then use the stories to discuss the lessons, for example:
Ant and Grasshopper → save in the good season / emergency fund / winter always comes
Goose that laid the golden eggs → don’t kill a productive asset for a lump sum
Milkmaid and her pail → don’t spend money you don’t have yet
Aesop’s Fables are wonderful to teach character and moral lessons that determine money outcomes.
I look at it as stories of behavioural finance between two covers.
It amazes me that these stories were written by a slave , 2 600 years ago, & are still relevant to our modern money matters today!
