[Nouveaux arrivants 🇫🇷]

Bienvenue aux nouvelles familles françaises de l’École française du Cap ! ✨

La semaine dernière, la Consule générale de France, Sophie Bel, accompagnée des Conseillers des Français de l’étranger, Alexandre Barrière-Izard et Alain Samy, de la directrice de l’école primaire, Olivia Ashby, ainsi que du nouveau proviseur, Samuel Robardet, a accueilli les nouvelles familles françaises de l’établissement autour d’un café-croissants. ☕

💬Ce moment convivial a permis aux familles de faire connaissance, d’échanger sur leur arrivée en Afrique du Sud et de découvrir le rôle et les missions du Consulat général auprès de la communauté française.

📌 Démarches administratives, état civil, protection consulaire, affaires scolaires ou encore accompagnement des Français à l’étranger : le Consulat général est un interlocuteur de proximité pour les Français de la circonscription.

Nous leur souhaitons une très belle installation et beaucoup de réussite dans cette nouvelle aventure sud-africaine. 🇿🇦

📸 Foundations of Freedom: The Early Years of South Africa’s Democracy

As part of the Cape Town Photography Festival, Sanlam Art Gallery presents Foundations of Freedom, a photographic exhibition by French photographer Patrick de Mervelec.

The exhibition looks back at the early years of South Africa’s democracy through de Mervelec’s photographs, including defining moments such as the inauguration of President Nelson Mandela at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 10 May 1994.

The exhibition opens on Thursday, 17 September, with welcoming remarks by Sophie Bel, Consul General of France in Cape Town.

De la ville du Cap à Paris, la culture sud-africaine à l’honneur ! 🎶

Ce vendredi 11 septembre, le Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble se produira à la Philharmonie de Paris pour jouer 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘉𝘦𝘴𝘴 de George Gershwin, aux côtés du Chineke! Orchestra.

Cette représentation constitue une nouvelle occasion de célébrer l’excellence artistique sud-africaine et le rayonnement international de la scène culturelle de la ville du Cap.

🎤Elle est aussi l’occasion de rappeler que Cape Town Opera est l’unique opéra d’Afrique Sub-saharienne et le seul à avoir mis en place un Young Artist Program destiné à former les jeunes chanteurs lyriques diplômés d’Afrique australe.

Nous adressons tous nos vœux de succès au Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble pour cette représentation parisienne et souhaitons à ses artistes une magnifique soirée sur la scène de la Philharmonie ! ✨

From Cape Town to Paris, celebrating South African culture! 🎶

This Friday, 11 September, the Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble will perform at the Philharmonie de Paris in George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, alongside the Chineke! Orchestra.

This performance is another opportunity to celebrate South African artistic excellence and the international recognition of Cape Town’s vibrant cultural scene.

🎤 It is also an opportunity to highlight that Cape Town Opera is the only opera company in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the only one to have established a Young Artist Programme dedicated to training young opera singers who have graduated from institutions across Southern Africa.

We wish the Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble every success for this Paris performance and its artists a wonderful evening on the stage of the Philharmonie! ✨

[Rencontre 🇫🇷🤝🇿🇦]

Ce matin, la Consule générale de France au Cap, Sophie Bel, a rendu visite à Lucinda Evans, fondatrice du Philisa Abafazi Bethu SA, pour découvrir le travail mené par son équipe auprès des femmes et des enfants victimes de violences dans les communautés du Cap.

Depuis près de vingt ans, Lucinda Evans s’engage pour offrir aux survivantes un espace de sécurité, d’écoute et d’accompagnement, tout en développant des actions de prévention et de sensibilisation auprès des jeunes et des familles. 🌱

Son engagement exceptionnel a été reconnu par la France : Lucinda Evans a été faite Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur en mars 2016, en hommage à son action en faveur des femmes et des enfants et à son combat contre les violences basées sur le genre. 🏅

💬Cette visite a été l’occasion d’échanger sur les réalités du terrain, les défis auxquels font face les communautés et l’importance de soutenir les acteurs locaux qui œuvrent chaque jour pour construire des communautés plus sûres et plus résilientes.

Un engagement qui résonne avec les valeurs que la France et l’Afrique du Sud partagent : égalité, solidarité et dignité pour toutes et tous.🌍

[Meeting 🇫🇷🤝🇿🇦]

This morning, Consul General of France in Cape Town Sophie Bel visited Lucinda Evans, founder of the Philisa Abafazi Bethu Centre, to learn more about the vital work her team is doing to support women and children affected by violence in communities across Cape Town.

For nearly twenty years, Lucinda Evans has worked tirelessly to provide survivors with a safe space where they can find support, care and guidance, while also leading prevention and awareness initiatives aimed at young people and families. 🌱

Her remarkable commitment was recognised by France in March 2016, when she was awarded the Légion d’honneur, in recognition of her dedication to supporting women and children and her fight against gender-based violence. 🏅

💬 The visit was an opportunity to discuss the realities faced by communities on the ground, the challenges they continue to encounter, and the importance of supporting local organisations working every day to build safer, stronger and more resilient communities.

An engagement that reflects the shared values of France and South Africa: equality, solidarity and dignity for all. 🌍

« Correct the Map » : l’Afrique redessine sa place sur la carte du monde 🌍

Vendredi 4 septembre, l’Assemblée générale de l’ONU a adopté, par 164 voix contre 1, la résolution « Correct the Map », portée par le Togo.

🖊️La résolution encourage l’utilisation de projections cartographiques qui représentent plus fidèlement les superficies réelles des continents, notamment l’Afrique. La projection de Mercator, conçue à l’origine pour la navigation, donne en effet une représentation très déformée des superficies : l’Afrique apparaît notamment bien plus petite qu’elle ne l’est réellement.

La France a voté en faveur de la résolution et a elle-même annoncé l’abandon de Mercator dans les supports de sa diplomatie. 🇫🇷

“Correct the Map”: Africa redraws its place on the world map 🌍

On Friday 4 September, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the “Correct the Map” resolution by 164 votes to 1, led by Togo.

🖊️ The resolution encourages the use of map projections that more accurately reflect the true size of the world’s continents, particularly Africa. Originally designed for navigation, the Mercator projection significantly distorts the size of landmasses: Africa, in particular, appears much smaller than it actually is.

France voted in favour of the resolution and has itself announced that it will move away from the Mercator projection in its diplomatic materials. 🇫🇷

Visite de travail dans le Northern Cape 🤝

La Consule générale de France au Cap, Sophie Bel, accompagnée du Consul général de Belgique, Nicolas Fierens Gevaer, a rencontré le Premier de la province du Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul à l’occasion d’une visite de courtoisie.

💬 Cette rencontre a été l’occasion d’échanger sur la province, ses enjeux et les perspectives de coopération, ainsi que de renforcer le dialogue avec les autorités locales.

Un moment privilégié pour poursuivre les échanges et renforcer les liens entre la France, la Belgique et l’Afrique du Sud. 🌍
