Some of the most meaningful things we leave behind aren't things at all. They're the difference we make.

For one NSRI donor, a gift left in their will became part of a rescue vessel. Years later, that vessel was there when a diver needed help. That is the quiet power of a legacy. Something chosen today can continue helping others long into the future. With National Wills Week coming up, we take a look at how leaving a gift to the NSRI can become part of someone's story, and someone else's second chance.

There is no single way to save a life.

For some, it means heading out to sea when others are coming back. For others, it means teaching a child how to feel safe in the water, keeping rescue equipment ready, or supporting a crew from the shore. During Women’s Month, we celebrated four remarkable women who each found their own way to make a difference.Their stories are a beautiful reminder that you don’t have to be extraordinary to have an extraordinary impact. Sometimes, you simply have to be willing to show up.

At 15h13 on Monday, 31 August, NSRI Durban duty crew and the KZN Surf Rescue network were activated after eyewitnesses reported a man in distress on the Umgeni River, being swept upstream between the two roadway bridges on the incoming tide. NSRI Durban rescue swimmers, eThekwini Municipal lifeguards, eThekwini Municipal Coastal Water members and Netcare 911 responded. https ://www.nsri.org.za/2026/09/nsri-durban-good-samaritans-rescue-man-swept-up-umgeni-river/

While responding to callouts remains our primary mission, our crew and new trainees have been hard at work behind the scenes, dedicating countless hours to training. From seamanship and towing exercises to rescue procedures and boat handling, every session helps build the skills, confidence, and teamwork needed to respond effectively when called upon. We are proud of the commitment shown by our volunteers as they continue to develop and refine their capabilities on and off the water.

Over the past period, our Station 3 crew has responded to multiple callouts assisting vessels in difficulty at sea. Quick mobilisation, careful assessment, and coordinated teamwork saw all vessels successfully assisted and brought to safety, with the well-being of those onboard always our top priority

Throughout March we’ve had a number of callouts to assist vessels back to safety alongside crew training sessions. And a sneaky 10 year service award for Gal 🙌
