Clash at Table Bay 1510

In March 1510, in the region of Table Bay, a significant episode in the early encounters between Europeans and Indigenous peoples of Southern Africa took place.

The Portuguese fleet led by Francisco de Almeida stopped in the bay to resupply. Tensions arose with local Khoikhoi communities, leading to a confrontation that moved inland, near the area now known as Salt River.

The clash ended in a Portuguese defeat and the death of their commander, marking an important moment in the early colonial history of the Cape region.

Today, this event is part of the historical narratives presented at the Castle of Good Hope, where artworks and exhibitions help revisit this foundational period of South Africa’s history.
