When a fire starts, access is everything.

Ask yourself:
📌Can emergency vehicles reach your property easily?
📌Are your driveways clear and wide enough?
📌Are gates accessible and marked?

🚒 Delays in access = faster spread of fire.

Make it easier for crews to protect your property.

👉 Use the winter season to get prepared. Contact your relevant ward manager for advice and guidance: https://cpfpa.org.za

Wind + Fuel + Relative Humidity = Fire Danger

You’ve reduced fuel loads - now consider the next risk: wind.

In the Western Cape, strong winds can turn small fires into fast-moving veldfires.

What increases the danger?
➡️ Overgrown invasive vegetation
➡️ Dry, unmanaged fuel loads
➡️ No defensible space

🔥 Wind-driven fires spread faster, burn hotter, and are harder to control.

Although it is known, landowners tend to let this slip during the winter months, which is EXACTLY when land owners should be focusing on preparation and cleaning ahead of the summer months.

Winter prep now = less risk in summer.

May marks the start of stack burning season in Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula - a critical time for fire risk reduction ahead of summer.

The CPFPA 5 R’s framework helps guide effective veldfire management:

🔍 REVIEW and ANALYZE - Assess past veldfire incidents to improve future prevention, response, and recovery efforts.
🔥 RISK REDUCTION - Reduce fuel loads through stack burning, clearing, and defensible space
🚒 READINESS - Ensure resources, plans, and firefighting teams are prepared and aligned
⚡ RESPONSE - Enable early detection, rapid response, and safe fire suppression
🌱 RECOVERY - Restore affected areas, infrastructure, and support communities

📍 In the Western Cape, winter preparation is key to reducing summer veldfire impact.

👉 Contact your ward manager for a comprehensive veldfire risk assessment.
👉 Before you burn, ensure you’re compliant: https://cpfpa.org.za/control-prescribed-burning/

Burn responsibly. Plan ahead. Stay compliant.

Creating Defensible Space – What Does It Mean?

Creating defensible space doesn’t mean stripping your land bare, it means managing vegetation smartly to reduce fire risk. Defensible space is your property’s first line of defence against veldfire.

Here’s how to do it:
• 0–5m: Clear dry leaves, debris & flammable items
• 5–30m: Trim & space vegetation, remove invasives
• Access: Keep driveways & gates clear for emergency vehicles
• Maintain: Regular clearing is essential

📍In the Western Cape’s high-risk fire environment, small actions make a big difference.

Protect your home. Protect your neighbours. Follow our “Wildland Fire Action Checklist” on our website ➡️ https://cpfpa.org.za/wildfire-management/

Defensible space is a critical fire prevention strategy. It refers to a buffer zone around your home or property that is cleared and managed to slow or stop the spread of veldfire.

WHY IT MATTERS:
✅ Reduces fire intensity near structures
✅ Protects homes, infrastructure, and lives
✅ Creates safer working conditions for firefighters
✅ Helps prevent fires from spreading between properties
✅ Proactive vs. Reactive ➡️ a proactive measure taken before a fire occurs, shifting some of the responsibility from emergency services to the homeowner.

WHO IT APPLIES TO:
If your property borders fynbos, mountains, open land, or the urban edge - this is essential.

If you live in areas like Noordhoek, Hout Bay, Constantia, Tokai, Helderberg, against mountain ranges, or anywhere along the urban edge, this applies directly to YOU.

Keep following us as we share tips on how to create defensible space on your property.

🔥 Understanding the Fire Danger Index (FDI)

The Fire Danger Index (FDI) indicates how likely a fire is to start and how quickly it can spread. The FDI is calculated daily, taking into account several environmental factors such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall.

FDI is shared daily during the months of November to April – the FDI is vital for operational readiness and public safety warnings.

Staying aware of daily fire danger levels helps you make safer decisions and take the necessary precautions.

🚒 Behind the Scenes at CPFPA

Integrated Fire Management (IFM) focusses on veldfire risk reduction, and ensuing readiness, not just responding when veldfires occur.

From monitoring conditions to maintaining readiness, ongoing work happens behind the scenes to ensure effective veldfire prevention and response with all CPFPA members across the City of Cape Town.

The CPFPA Ward Managers remain committed to protecting communities, property, and the natural environment.

Members are encouraged to take control of their veldfire risk. For more information, talk to your Ward Manager and let them empower you with the right knowledge, tools, and support to better protect your property against veldfires.
