With great respect.. to Former President and Mrs President...

Welcome to South Africa...

“One day, I arrived home and found OR sleeping in the spare room. When he woke up in the evening he wanted to go to Makeni. It was raining quiet heavily. We waited for Comrade Nxumalo to come and pick him up but Nxumalo did not arrive and so eventually OR asked me to take him. The flat/townhouse had huge sliding doors leading to the garden where my car was parked next to a big pine tree. The rain had stopped. As we approached the car we saw a small snake slithering across our path towards the car. I got a fright and stepped back; when I looked around for OR he was not there. I looked back into the house and saw him peeping from a half open door of the bedroom. He wanted me to deal with the snake. He would not come out. Also afraid to step out. No luck. Eventually I took courage and got out into the driver’s seat and hooted for him to come out. As we drove along I thought to myself how ironic it was that this great revolutionary of the South African struggle, a leader who was taking on the whole Apartheid of South Africa, was afraid of a little snake. It is the ordinariness of the people leading our struggle that I find so amazing and reassuring. He was an ordinary human being, retaining childhood phobias – a small snake being one of them. We laughed a lot about it.” – Mrs Zanele Mbeki, in the book “Oliver Tambo Remembered” : Let Us Deepen Unity
