🇪🇺🇧🇪🇫🇷🇩🇪🇪🇸🇵🇹🇬🇷🇳🇱 On 11 June, Consul General Nicolas Fierens Gevaert hosted a working breakfast at the Belgian Residence for his EU colleagues in the presence of Mr. Alwie Lester as guest speaker.

⚡️🇿🇦 Western Cape Premier Alan Winde appointed Mr. Lester as his Special Advisor on Energy in January 2023. In this role, he leads the province’s energy resilience drive to protect the regional economy from load shedding.

♻️ Mr. Lester gave an update on the provincial government’s energy security efforts to generate affordable, accessible and sustainable energy supply in the Western Cape thanks largely to private sector-led renewable energy solutions. He also presented the latest prospects for the development of green hydrogen in the region.

🇪🇺🤝🇿🇦 Through its Global Gateway Strategy and other programmes, the European Union is supporting South Africa’s transition to green hydrogen and a more energy-secure future.

🙌 Team Belgium at the “EU–Namibia Business Forum”!

🇪🇺🇳🇦 Following the first edition organized in October 2023 in Brussels, the 2nd “EU-Namibia Business Forum” took place from 11-13 May 2026 in Windhoek, under the theme “Towards stronger, greener and more diversified economies: Catalyzing Business and Trade Opportunities between the EU and Namibia.”

💬 Bringing together over 400 high-level attendees from EU and Namibian private sectors, policy makers, innovators and financing institutions, the forum offered panel discussions, dedicated exhibition spaces, and a robust B2B platform.

🤝 At the opening of the business forum, European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall announced the renewal until 2030 of the “EU-Namibia Strategic Partnership Roadmap”, expressing the renewed commitment by Namibia and the EU to accelerate green industrialisation, strengthen local value chains, and support inclusive economic growth.

🇧🇪 Consul General Nicolas Fierens Gevaert led the Belgian delegation, which also included the Deputy Trade & Investment Commissioner for Flanders, representatives from Belgian development agency Enabel as well as Belgian companies CMB.TECH, Jan De Nul Group, Port of Antwerp-Bruges International (PoABI), and GADOT Group.

♻️ Enabel is developing specific programs to support Namibia’s green transition through vocational training, port modernisation and low-carbon industrialisation, while both CMB.TECH and PoABI remain major players in Namibia’s green industrialisation with significant projects in the green hydrogen and the sustainable development of the port of Walvis Bay.

🏳️‍🌈On Wednesday 20 May, in recognition of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia ( ), the Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town, with the support of the General Representation of Flanders in Southern Africa, hosted a special event at the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.

🎤📜The event opened with an insightful keynote address by Professor Pierre de Vos (UCT), who reflected on the protection of LGBTQI+ rights in the South African Constitution since its adoption in 1996, as well as on more recent legal developments and case law.

👭👬The keynote was followed by a powerful panel discussion 💬 titled “At the heart of Democracy: LGBTQI+ rights, 30 years into South Africa’s Constitution”, moderated by Gaba Capitaine from Triangle Project. We were honored to have representatives from leading organizations including Triangle Project, Gender Dynamix, Loud Enough, the National Prosecuting Authority and academia.

✊🌈Together we reflected on what constitutional protection of LGBTQI+ rights means in practice for communities across South Africa and on the urgent steps still needed to safeguard these hard-won, yet not irreversible, rights.

🇧🇪🇿🇦 Both Belgium and South Africa are pioneers in promoting and defending the rights of LGBTQI+ persons, and the Consulate General of Belgium remains committed to supporting local organisations working towards equality, dignity and inclusion.

🇧🇪🇿🇦 On Saturday 9 May, Consul General Nicolas Fierens Gevaert hosted an informal reception at his residence with a few French-speaking Belgians who have made Cape Town their home, on the occasion of the visit to South Africa of Mr. David Van Wynsberghe, Managing Director of the “Union Francophone des Belges à l’Etranger” (U.F.B.E.).

🌍 The U.F.B.E. has been active for over half a century and is aimed at (future) French-speaking Belgians expatriates. Its purpose is to make the administrative and practical challenges of living abroad as straightforward as possible. The Flemish counterpart of the U.F.B.E. is Vlamingen in de Wereld and her representative for South Africa, Ms. Anne Verbist, based in Cape Town, was also present.

🍻 The Belgians in attendance were able to chat over a few good Belgian beers and some canapés about their experiences in South Africa and the challenges they face. It was also a great opportunity to meet fellow Belgians recently arrived in Cape Town!

ℹ️ If you would like more information about the U.F.B.E. and Vlamingen in de Wereld, you can always consult their website mentioned on the last page of this photo album.

❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 On this International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia ( ), now more than ever, we stand together in celebrating diversity and promoting respect for the + community. We embrace all forms of love and identities!

🏳️‍🌈 The date, 17 May, was chosen to commemorate a landmark event in LGBTQI+ history: on 17 May 1990, the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its International Classification of Diseases, officially recognizing that same-sex attraction is not a mental disorder. The first official IDAHOBIT observance took place in 2005, and it has since grown into a global movement.

🇧🇪 🌍 Belgium deplores and strongly condemns the resurgence of acts of discrimination and violence against LGBTQI+ people. Too often, LGBTQI+ people are still the target of violence, harassment, stigmatisation and disinformation campaigns that fuel hate. At both the national and international levels, we will continue to play a leading role in the protection and promotion of the rights of LGBTQI+ people. This commitment is reflected in our active participation in multilateral coalitions, our bilateral dialogues with like-minded states, and in our international cooperation.

💡Did you know that the City of Cape Town Collaboration Platform has been developed by a Belgian company?

🇧🇪🛜 Founded in 2015 in Brussels, Go Vocal (formerly CitizenLab) is a community engagement platform that helps governments and public organisations make decision-making more inclusive, participatory, and responsive. It provides a centralised digital space where residents can share ideas, give feedback, and shape local projects — while giving public servants the tools to collect, manage, and act on that input. Notable clients include the cities of Copenhagen, Vienna, Seattle, Dublin, Oslo, St. Louis, Kansas City, Ghent, Cambridge, the London Borough of Newham, and… Cape Town!

🇿🇦 Last month, Go Vocal’s CEO & Co-Founder Wietse Van Ransbeeck was in Cape Town to open the Future Cities Dialogue alongside 100+ senior officials from the city. On this occasion, Consul General Nicolas Fierens Gevaert had the honour of hosting a working breakfast at the Belgian Residence with Executive Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews and other relevant city officials to discuss the latest developments regarding the implementation of Cape Town’s community engagement platform.

🤝 Together with our colleagues from the Wallonia-Brussels Trade Commission (AWEX) in Johannesburg, the Consulate General also assisted Go Vocal in arranging meetings with other local authorities in the Western Cape province to discuss possible future cooperation.
