The Caledon Wildflower Garden & Nature Reserve

The Caledon Wildflower Garden & Nature Reserve This is a page for the friends of The Caledon Wildflower Garden and Nature Reserve’s. We hope for a greener future.

Its heritage goes back to the Khoi and although once a spectacular botanical experience now it is severely neglected by failed leadership.

A few years back there was a tree which fell in this spot. It blocked 2 lovely paths up to the Venster rock formation and was only removed after more than a year. And now we have another tree blocking these paths which fell last year already.

I just want to thank whoever did this. I assume it is the people working at the garden who have to do their job with very limited tools and almost no resources.

It is quite frustrating to see how people displace the stone borders on many of the paths in the garden.

The municipality obviously does not budget for the gardens let alone the nature reserve. We know that. It has been like that regardless which political party leads TWK.

It is already a fight and then you have the reality of people who have no respect and just like to destroy things because they can. This is the hardest part of any culture to change because first, respect is taught. And when it is not shown in this way, investigation and consequences are not priorities in our current societal make-up.

Reeds are pretty and help with filtration, bank erosion and habitation but left uncontrolled as with the pond in the gardens it leads to overgrowth, choking, less water surface area, mosquito breeding, too many nutrients and we can’t enjoy it because there is little access or viewing options from the banks. Currently the reeds are choking about half of the pond.
