BOITUMELO HOSPITAL A SIGHT OF GREAT JUBILATION

“Ke tsamaya joale ka bohle, ke thabile, ke fodile, ke bona ka mahlo” so went the song by some of the patients who underwent cataract operation at Boitumelo hospital in Kroonstad on Sunday, 31 May 2026.

Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae and MEC for Health Monyatso Mahlatsi visited the hospital as part of what has been dubbed a weekend of surgical blitz. To date, 80 surgeries have been performed with more still to be done.

Nomvuso Mkhwanazi from Villiers said she was happy to have regained full sight. The 61 year-old said her sight began failing her a few years back.

“Only one eye, the left one, could see. The other one was completely blind, but following the operation, I can see. I am grateful to our government for what they have done for us,” said Mkhwanazi.

Thenjiwe Kebile from Vredefort said she had been waiting for an operation for over two decades.

“I began losing sight from 2004 and have been waiting for this operation for a long time. I cannot put into words how happy I am,” Kebile said.

Premier Letsoha-Mathae, addressing the patients, said the seventh administration was committed to improving the quality of the lives of the people of the Free State province.

“This government is and will always be on the side of the people. We have taken a resolution to take services closer to the people and that is what we are doing. We have challenges but we are working hard to bring changes in our province,” Premier Letsoha-Mathae said.

The Premier and MEC Mahlatsi also made an unannounced visit to Katleho hospital in Virginia.

PREMIER LETSOHA-MATHAE PAYS TRIBUTE TO FALLEN SOLDIERS

The annual wreath laying ceremony and International United Nations Peacekeepers Remembrance Day at the South African National Defence Force Mobilisation Centre was a sombre affair.

Families whose loved ones died in the line of duty laid wreaths in their memory. Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae joined Minister of Defence and Military Veterans in honouring those who died in the line of duty.

The singing of Abide by Me, a gut-wrenchinghymn by the SANDF choir, opened the water works and Premier Letsoha-Mathae said those who lost their lives in defence of the people will never be forgotten. Their selfless sacrifices, she said, have lionised them and turned them into heroes.

“In a world longing for lasting peace and the permanent silencing of the guns, a select few have raised their hands and bravely stepped forward to keep us safe. These are men and women who, with no regard for their own safety, put themselves in harm’s way to ensure our safety,” said Premier Letsoha-Mathae.

The Premier reflected on 14 South African soldiers, three of whom hailed from the Free State, who tragically lost their lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo last year, saying their deaths struck a terrible blow to the country. They were Staff Sergeant Molahlehi Ishmael Molahlehi from Selosesha in Thaba-Nchu, Rifleman Tshidiso Andries Mabele from Senekal, and Rifleman Mokete Joseph Mobe from U-Section in Botshabelo.

She said their deaths was a sobering reminder that defending democracy often comes at a heavy price.

“The death of those brave soldiers was a reminder that peace is such a precious gift. It was also a reminder that at the blink of an eye, the peace that we enjoy can be easily stolen from us,” she said.

The Premier also expressed appreciation to soldiers who had gathered at the event.

“Perhaps we do not say it enough, but we are truly indebted to them for what they do for our country. They go where only a few would dare. They go to warzones and navigate their way in minefield laden areas and come face to face with deranged warlords with no compassion or regard for human life. They do all of that because they care,” she said.

Minister Motsoaledi and Premier Letsoha-Mathae Review State of Health in the Free State

Bloemfontein, 28 May 2026 — Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi met with Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae at O.R. Tambo House in Bloemfontein to assess the province’s health system and fast-track improvements. The engagement included MEC for Health Monyatso Mahlatsi, MEC for Finance Toto Makume, senior administrators and service delivery leads.

Dr Motsoaledi highlighted that with his team they have already visited five provinces to date, with the Free State being the sixth, as part of a national effort to address health system challenges. He stressed that a functional health system must be anchored in the World Health Organization’s Six Building Blocks and acknowledged gaps in translating these pillars into consistently responsive care.

“Strong political support and sound administration are essential to better outcomes,” he said, calling on health professionals to uphold their public service obligations. Cautioning against practices that undermine care, he added that “Some health professionals take remunerative work outside the public service during times when they should be teaching and supporting junior staff. They treat patients with care in private settings, but when they return to public facilities the treatment is not the same. That is unacceptable and has to change.”

On financial management and procurement, the Minister announced the establishment of cost centres to improve accountability and end‑user participation. “We have seen items procured without input from frontline staff - like blankets that proved to be poor quality. With cost centres, all personnel will be involved, so that everyone has a say on the products being procured to eliminate prospects of corrupt practices,” he said.

Premier Letsoha-Mathae pointed to historical weaknesses in recruitment and incomplete projects currently under investigation by the Special Investigating Unit. “I will be meeting the SIU soon for progress updates,” she said. The Premier also highlighted progress made, including filling critical vacancies for doctors, improved infrastructure spending, and investments in health technologies that have earned the department a digital innovation award and public acknowledgment by its peers.

Dr Motsoaledi commended the province’s strong collaboration between Health and the Provincial Treasury to close financing gaps that support lifesaving care. He further noted new Global Fund support that will strengthen facility capacity, including local production of vital supplies such as oxygen.

To protect patient rights and improve service quality, the Premier said unannounced visits to facilities will continue. The province has earmarked more than R118 million for facility maintenance, and R70 million for linen procurement through a Department of Employment and Labour facility that also develops skills and creates jobs for persons with disabilities.

The Free State was acknowledged as the only province to have fully rolled out the Health Patient Registration System (HPRS). A national launch of HPRS as a country model will be hosted at Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital in Bloemfontein, with added digital elements such as ePrescribing and eDispensing to expand the e-Impilo programme.
