Harnessing Sustainable Energy for Industrial Growth
The Free State Development Corporation (FDC), in partnership with the National Cleaner Production Centre South Africa, recently hosted a high-level stakeholder engagement session at the Phuthaditjhaba Industrial Park.
As part of the Sustainable Energy Systems for Industrial Development (SESID) project, we brought together experts from government, Eskom, academia, and industry to tackle the energy challenges facing our industrial sector.
Key Highlights from the Session:
Tackling Infrastructure Realities: Discussions led by the Municipal Electrical Infrastructure Manager and Eskom focused on the impact of load reduction, aging infrastructure, and the urgent need to combat cable theft and vandalism.
The Future of Renewables: We explored how solar power can reduce operational costs and boost long-term energy security for businesses.
Beyond Generation: A vital contribution from the University of the Free State highlighted that solar isn't just about the size of the panels—it’s about energy storage. Without effective battery systems, we cannot maximize the efficiency of renewable energy.
Green Economy Opportunities: The session touched on how the green transition can drive skills development, local investment, and support for our small businesses.
Collaboration is Key
The path to a cleaner, more resilient industrial landscape requires a united front between municipalities, energy providers, and the private sector. Through the SESID project, the FDC remains committed to fostering sustainable economic growth and energy reliability in the Free State.
