Okhahlamba Local Municipality

Okhahlamba Local Municipality The Official page for the Okhahlamba Local Municipality in Bergville - part of the Uthukela District Municipality in Northern KwaZulu Natal.

Okhahlamba Local Municipality is situated in the mountainous region of KwaZulu-Natal between Lesotho, the Free State, Alfred Duma Local Municipality and Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality. Okhahlamba is made up of privately owned commercial farmland; smallholder settlements; the urban areas of Bergville, Winterton, Cathkin Park, and Geluksberg; and two tribal authority areas. The area is rela

tively well linked through the network of existing provincial roads that run through the municipality. The municipality is largely reliant on Ladysmith for facilities such as shopping, medical services and education, among other services. Large capital expenditure is needed to meet service backlogs in the area. Bergville is a small town and is known as the gateway to the Northern Drakensberg. Approximately half a million tourists are attracted to the Drakensberg annually. Bergville hosts an office of the Drakensberg Publicity Association. Less than 50km from the towering Amphitheatre of Royal Natal, the ideally-situated agricultural and trading centre of Bergville was laid out in 1897 by a retired sea captain. British forces built a blockhouse in the settlement two years later at the onset of the Anglo-Boer War - that building is now a monument and museum within the grounds of the Bergville Court House. The council manages a caravan park and holiday huts on the bank of the uThukela River. A playground and facilities for sports, including swimming, tennis, bowls, cricket, golf, rugby and badminton, are available. A modern community hall serves as a town hall. Cities/Towns: Bergville, Cathkin Park, Winterton

MEC BUTHELEZI PLACES DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAMS ON HIGH ALERT FOLLOWING HIGH FIRE DANGER WARNING

26 AUGUST 2024

The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Rev. Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has placed disaster management teams on high alert following a weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service. The warning indicates that the province will experience dry and hot conditions on Tuesday, 27 August, which are conducive to the development and rapid spread of fires.

This alert comes in the wake of the devastating wildfires that swept through KwaZulu-Natal last month, claiming 14 lives, destroying hundreds of thousands of hectares of grazing land, and causing significant damage to vehicles and homes.

Residents across the province are urged to be extra vigilant due to the heightened risk of wildfires under these conditions. Disaster management teams are strategically positioned in areas prone to runaway fires.

MEC Buthelezi has called on all residents to remain alert, as wildfires can have severe consequences for surrounding communities. The districts most at risk include Zululand, Harry Gwala, uThukela, Amajuba, Mkhanyakude, uMzinyathi, and uMgungundlovu.

Preventative Actions to Reduce Wildfire Risk:

- Avoid making fires in open areas and never leave fires unattended.
- Do not discard cigarette butts from vehicles or in open fields.
- Refrain from leaving bottles in the veld, as they can magnify sunlight and ignite fires.
- Prepare and maintain firebreaks in a controlled manner.
- If a large fire occurs, report it immediately and move to a safe area to allow professionals to manage the situation.
- In the event of water shortages, use sand to help control the fire.
