Three Tree Hill

Three Tree Hill Owner-Managed, Fair Trade certified, small luxury lodge in Northern Drakensberg and Anglo Boer War Battlefields

“Quintessential Africa!” has been the exclamation of several guests visiting the owner-managed Three Tree Hill Lodge. Set in the foothills of the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, the luxurious private rooms overlook a secret valley of the Spioenkop Game Reserve. In the lee of that famous hill, Spioenkop, the period-piece lodge has been built on a hillside amongst the striking Aloe Spectabilis and t

he Paperbark Acacia. Relax on the large colonial-styled verandah from where rhino, giraffe, zebra, eland, kudu, numerous smaller antelope can be seen, perhaps even from your bath! So far 290 bird species ranging from Cape Vultures and Lanner Falcons to Buff Streaked Chats and Fairy Flycatchers have been recorded in the area. On offer are wide range of activities ranging from guided bush walks, birding, mountain biking and horse-trails, guided Drakensberg hiking as well as historical tours each of which can be tailored to suite couples or families. Three Tree Hill Lodge also specialises in the Second Anglo-Boer War from (1899-1902) with the soulful and atmospheric Battle of Spioenkop being a focal point. This war was the biggest, the longest, the costliest, the bloodiest and most humiliating war that Great Britain fought in between 1815 and 1914's where a professional modern army was repeatedly thrashed by a “bunch of backward farmers”. Our guides bring this dramatic period of our history to life presenting world class, holistic, evocative and insightful tours.

The battle of Thukela Heights consisted of a series of military actions lasting from 14 February through to 27 February 1900. Generals Lucas Meyer (left) and Louis Botha (right) exercised a joint command in this battle, which was not altogether successful. General Sir Redvers Buller's British army eventually forced the Boer army to lift the Siege of Ladysmith after this victory.

This battle was sometimes described as the biggest setpiece battle in the Southern Hemisphere until the Falklands Campaign.

Today we remember the BATTLE OF VAALKRANS – 5 February 1900, one of the pivotal battles of the Anglo-Boer War fought right here in the Drakensberg foothills, near Three Tree Hill.

These hills carry stories of courage, strategy, and sacrifice — a powerful reminder of the rich history that surrounds us. The Battle of Vaalkrans was the third failed attempt by General Redvers Buller's British army to fight its way past Louis Botha's army of Boers and lift the Siege of Ladysmith.

By visiting Three Tree Hill, you will step back in time, walk the landscapes where history unfolded, and experience South Africa’s past come alive.
